vacumm pump

Does anyone know if you can start a 617 with the vacumm pump removed? Will it damage anything, or just not shut off? Thank You Bob

Oil will spray out of the vacuum pump opening. And since there will not be any vacuum, the vacuum shut-off is guaranteed not to work.

Thank you, I thought so, I knew the shut off wouldn't work, but I was not sure about how much oil would spray out if I ran it for about a minute. Bob

Just for further info in case someone else does things as nutty as me, when you start the car w/o the vacumm pump, very little oil comes out and it seems to bother nothing at all. Oh, I still have not found what I was looking for, but the pump did look good

Running without vacuum pump

Well, I have been known to do nutty things once in a while myself... I don't think it would be too hard to fabricate a cover for the pump opening, apparently not a high-pressure situation. But there are several vacuum functions besides fuel shutoff, including brake boost (not essential if your foot is heavy enough) door locks on early cars, and transmission shifting. Any others?

Steve;
The fact that both of us are in CenCal, and talking about nutty things we do might give the wrong impression about us in the golden state.........Uh, might not be that big of a stretch.
