123 front sway bar upgrade
does any one make an upgrade kit for the front sway bar? I would like a stiffer larger diameter bar and poly bushings. or at the very least poly bushings for a 300TD bar. I see many posts about the 124, but what about the 123?

I believe the W123 sway bar attaches to the firewall requiring you to remove everything attached to the firewall to replace it. That would dissuade most from upgrading.

Why in the world would you want a bigger front sway bar on a 123? The car already understeers. The front bar on a 123 already is so big it looks like a piece of exhaust pipe. Stiffening the front sway bar will put in even MORE understeer.
Stiffening the rear bar on the other hand will take out some of the understeer and make it a much more predictable handling car. Good luck, |
Springs?
Rather than a heftier swaybar, how about stiffer springs and shocks? I put wagon springs on my sedan. I put new HD shocks in at the same time. The car seems to ride slightly higher in the back, but the handling is much closer to neutral. Wishful thinking?

Stiffer springs have the same effect as stiffer sway bars on the same end of the car.
Stiffening springs or sway bar on the front end of a car increase understeer. Stiffening springs or sway bar on the rear end of a car decrease understeer. Have a great day, |
Thanks for the info, Larry. I thought maybe I was just imagining the handling improvement.... When I worked at the dealership, I complained that the W124's pushed. One of the other techs overheard and told me I just wasn't going fast enough!!
Thanks again, Jay. |
i have found
all benzes i have driven pretty neutral. the trick is to mash the gas when in the turn. this will bring the rear out a bit and make it a lot more neutral. if you are braking while turning in it puts more weight on the front and hence it will push more. surprisingly this works with the rather weak 240 , even.

A Benz might feel neutral relative to other cars, but I have yet to drive ANY MB that was neutral handling.
Have a great day, |
