saggin' wagon
The passenger side rear is sagging. I had my girlfriend start the car and she put it in gear while I was about 20 feet behind that car, to see if that changed anything. The back end went down a little equally on both sides. But the passenger side rear was still lower than the driver side. Is the back end of a wagon supposed to go up or down when the car is in gear? I know my suspension valve is leaking hydroloc fluid. I have searched for saggy rears and found that a suspension vavle can be a culprit, but can is cause just one side to sag. Can a leaky valve cause this problems or do I have another problem?

I would lean more toward the shock or accumulator (leaking internally) on that side as the culprit.

accumulator
Is there any way to see if the accumulator is functioning properly.
Thanks

Crawl under the car on the saggy side and stick your fingers down where the spring/strut/semi-trailing arm all come together in that depression in the arm that serves as the spring seat. If there is a bunch of oily crud caked in there, it's an indication something is leaking.
If there is a leak, first remove the floor panel in between the rear seat and the cargo compartment/third seat. You'll see the upper shock fixing hex/socket-head bolt. Spray those with lube, in case you do have to remove them (I think there was loctite on the socket-heads on mine. If you have to remove these, warm 'em up a little with the heat gun). You'll see two black rubber acess panels. There's one on each side, about 3x3cm. Pop these out with a small pry bar (a little lube helps here, too). You'll have access to the fitting where the hydraulic hose from the accumulator attaches to the hydropneumatic strut. If you're lucky, that's where your leak is coming from. Otherwise, it's probably a bad strut. The absence of crud won't definitively eliminate the bad strut hypothesis - - more than likely that is the culprit - - so good luck!!! |
