windshield washer tank leak

Yes:
The typical windshield washer tank leak is caused by bad Washer Pump Grommet.
Locate the washer pump attached to the tank, carefully pull up on pump while rotating side to side, when pump is out, remove the bad grommet and pop in new grommet, install pump and fill tank.
Be prepared to replace the pump and/or hose also, with age they become delicate.
Mercedes Benz Nylon reinforced Washer Hose = 5 Meters; and
Hose can be replaced with rubber hose from your local generic auto parts store.

Here are the part numbers; but I suggest you check with your local MB dealer, they may be cheaper after S&H + minimum order cost.

If it is a crack:
The secret is to clean, dry and rough the outside of tank in repair area with medium sand paper, wire brush or abrading tool, then use canned (dry) air to blow clean, before applying any sealer.
I have used; hot glue gun, epoxy, super glue and many other products to repair the tank.
It may be cheaper for you to buy a new tank if cracks are bad.

Interestingly enough this happened to me just as the car hit 200K miles... I have to order that little rubber grommet.

Recently, I asked a similar question about a leak in my Green Machine gas tank and someone pointed out that Harbor Freight has a "Plastic Welder".

Looked it up on their web site, and it cost $29.95. Not bad and if you could catch one of their sales, it might even be cheaper. If I ever see it on sale, I am going to get one or even sooner if I need one again.

In the case of my gas tank, a local dealer had a tank from a Red Max trimmer that is interchangable with the one on my Green Machine. Apparently, that company bought out Green Machine. It was about $30 and I had bought it before that posting appeared.

If your tank is leaking, this might be a solution.

I had the nipple at the end of the pump break/corrode off.I drilled out the broken nipple to receive a short piece of brass tube (from an old automotive antenna) and epoxied it in. First thing I ever fixed on the car (1996) and it's still holding.

My pump is perfectly sealed but when I switch it on the washer fluid gushes out from under the hood. It seems like the nozzles on the hood might be clogged anyone have any idea on how to clean them out?

Make French fries not war!

When my nozzles clog, I use a welding tip cleaner on them. There are several diameters on the set and some are thin like a hair.

If the fluid is coming out under the hood, check the hoses that connect to the nozzles under the hood. Mine tend to fall off. If not, trace the hoses between the pump and the nozzle and find the leak. I just use a straight pin to clear the nozzles.

under hood leek

It actually leeks from that crappy white cylinder like clip down thingy in the center of the hood near the windshield...you know the cylinder like thingy! I haven’t dared to try and open it up completely since It wont clip shut correctly as it is ...I guess if I replace it that would stop the leek I'll try unclogging the nozzles tomorrow...now where would I find welding tip cleaners?

I think that doodad is a check valve. When mine came apart like that I just replaced it with a T connector. Been working for 7 years now. I have never had much luck cleaning the nozzles. I just replace them if they get plugged.

Grommet

I didn't feel like ordering a grommet, so wrapped a 1" sheet metal screw in duct tape, leave head exposed. Then took my drill and screwed it in, plugged it up just fine.

Thebignight 08-13-2005 08:36 AM

Thanx whunter...there’s a gas/welding shop downtown where I live...I guess I'll go and see if they have this there...Id love to work on the nozzles and that thingumajig (you know the doohickey) ;) under the hood today.
