water water ... in the trunk

OK, we had a good storm and I went to put something in the trunk and found water. In the sides where those recesses are .... under the plastic inserts. There are drain holes under the plastic (stopped up and I cleared them) is this a normal thing .... I can't believe it is?!?!? I traced the water and it looks like it's coming in from somewhere high where the back window is .... the window seal looks ok, not great but waterproof. Any similar problems out there??

If you do a search on water leaks in the trunk, I believe the concensus is usually the rear window seal. Some have replaced the seal entirely, others have used a sealant. I sealed mine with a "self-leveling" sealant which is much more fluid and also easier to remove if you decide to change the seal at a later date.

I had a water leak in a 116 due to the taillight gaskets leaking.

Same here. Maybe you can take the liners out and put a garden hose to it to pinpoint any leaks.

My problem was the tail light gaskets and some poorly crafted body work just above them. It took some doing to fix it. I posted some pictures on the process I used.

plastic trunk liner question

This is as good a time to delurk as any, I suppose...been reading this forum for weeks, and it's amazing how much info I can find here.

I have the same problem with my '81 300D, and I assume that when I get around to investigating the window seal problem, I'll find some variation on pwogaman's rust issue--until then, I choose to live in denial (and leave the car in the garage on rainy days).

For those who have removed the trunk lining, how do you do it without breaking the clips that hold the plastic in place? I can tell that I need to clear those drains, but I haven't been willing to just rip out the liners.

the liners just come out, i took them out to find out why it wasnt draining but that wasnt the problem, theyre harder to put in than they are to take out!

i found some nice old rotting wooden golf tees, but i also like old car excavations.

who *hasnt* found dope in an old vw poking around?

Check the trunk seal itself, the rear window seal--it can leak even if it looks ok, and the power antennae seal.

Arrow

Another spot could be through the trim holes under the outside body strips....where the little plastic clips fit into. They are in the right spots to leek into the wheel wells....

Ahh.......it's all BS......nobody knows where your leak is really coming from.

You probably know the drill already.

1) Get someone you trust.
2) Climb into trunk with flashlight.
3) Close lid.
4) Get the person to thoroughly hose down the vehicle.
5) Look for and locate the leak.
6) Get the person to let you out of the trunk. If this becomes a problem, then you have failed to follow step #1.

After posting (I was a bit freaked when I saw the water 1/4" deep, the drain holes were blocked) I searched and found several threads. I do appreciate everyone helping out and you all have pointed to the usual cuprits. I and going to climb in and do the flashlight trick, if it's not the window seal I'd like to avoid that whole situation. To me, the untrained eye that looks like a good possiblity .... the water trail comes from the top and on both sides. I read the rusty rear window thread and saw the pics .... now I'm freaked. I did this on my 84 Elky last year and it was a monsterous job. Since I'm having 2 very small rust spots in the rear quarters done soon anyway (cut and weld) I might as well do the window right. I only have 420K miles left before my engine rebuild so fixing right the first time makes more sense to me.
Thanks so much guys!
