compression check?

noob here...
How is a compression check (or blowby check) done on diesels? Is the pressure guage inserted into the glow plug hole? What is the accepted presssures and diffs. between cylinders?

Coincidence?

Wow - I was just going to come onto here and look for compression test posts and right on top was this one...

From what i've read in the manual, you can test through the glow plug hole with no problem. I don't know the numbers off hand though.
