Look what happened to an aftermarket part...pics inside

1992 300D 2.5 Turbo 137k

We installed these aftermarket mounts last summer just as a preventative maintenance. The car did not hit any potholes or anything like that....this popped out during regular driving. What can cause something like this ?

We just changed them with OEM ones from the dealership that were 60 bucks a piece instead of these cheapo ones for 20.

The metal in the mounts just broke and the shock went right through.

PICS:

Daughter's '87 300E did that on right side last year. But only because she went off the shoulder, down the 15 foot gulley and hit a pole. Her shocks were not that good so I suspect everything just bottomed out quickly and the mount took a bunch of the force.

Nope, I've not seen that with new parts...

Are the struts working properly? On critical and costly things I ussually opt for dealership parts because they will cover the damage. I did mine this past fall with new struts. I didn't remember the cost differene being so great- fastlane lists them as being $33. Where those lemforder or Febi parts? Look closely at the old ones for the country of manufacture-that would be interesting....

Example would be a timing chain where the independent refunds you the chain cost and labor where as the dealership puts in a new motor. I've actually heard this story here!

not sure what you are trying to say, but my thoughts are if you buy something that is of poor quality to get a low price, obviously it will not last as long as something of quality that may pay a little bit more for. i try to use all factory parts, rarely do i have any issues with failing parts.

These parts look exactly identical and had the same mercedes part number on them. It's also a possibility that an OEM part can fail just as fast.

being expensive does not necessarily translate to being of good quality.. an expensive part can break down as easily as any other replacement part out there...

one just tends to be frugal when it comes to expenses and weighs their options.. you can still find original and probably better parts that are cheaper than the parts that one may think of good quality because it is expensive....

as for the poster...good thing you were not driving fast when that happened!.. looks like the rubber part ripped...

It's a tricky subject, Ray.

On the face of it, you can draw the conclusion that you pay more money and you get a better part.

But, this is, unfortunately, too simplistic.

There are quite a few parts that can be purchased from OEM suppliers that are the exact same part as you would obtain from the M/B dealer, however, without the star on the envelope or the part. Some items that I can state with certainty include the Continental V-belts, the combination switch for the steering column, the rear springs, and the tie rods.

Other items such as the oil filter housing gasket, oil filters (603), head gasket, and oil cooler lines are clearly superior when purchased from the dealer.

So, you can't make a blanket statement that all items for which you pay extra money from the dealer are automatically superior.

Some are and some are not.

i did say factory, but i never once mentioned the dealer, i too know that many parts are available without the star, as a matter of fact a large percentage of parts i buy will have spot where something was ground off, that something was either a star or Mercedes-Benz name. the only things i buy from mercedes are specific items that are not available in the after market.

I have cracks around strut mounts and after having seen here what can happen, I wonder if anyone can determine what state my right front mount is in based on my photo below?

Note the aluminum top piece is tilted back and touches the rubber mount as the front has a space between. I wonder if this is a sign of trouble to come? The drivers side aluminum top piece has equal space at both ends!
