Take a look at this evap

out of a '85 300D. I replaced the compressor and dryer last weekend and have been working on the car (a "customer") trying to get it to make you "turn it down". I was not able to get what I considered the proper amount of air flow out of the system and also noticed some oil in the condensate. This is what I found. No wonder I was not getting as much air flow as I thought I should. It will continue to be an r12 car.
Took me 3-1/2 hours to get it on the floor. The lift even makes dashboard work tolerable.

I've always had that thought in the back of my mind why my 82's blower doesnt seem to blow as hard as some of my others. Next time my dash is out I'm going to have to check that.

I have an 87 300E at the house right now with the blower out and it's evap looked just like that. I cleaned it out as best as possible with it in the car, after charging the a/c and putting in a new blower motor and regulator, they both were toast.

That may be something the rest of us may need to check into with 20 year old cars.

Where do you think most of that garbage came from? You mentioned oil in the condensate, any suspicions as to the source?

3 1/2 hours to get the evaporator completely out of the 300D!!

That's simply amazing.

That lift must cause you to work at warp factor IX.

I wonder how many of us have the same situation???

Jim and Dave,

One end of that evaporator seems to be where the blockage is the worst. That appears to be the passenger side if I'm not mistaken. Maybe if I pull the blower motor, I can access it enough to spray a foaming coil cleaner that a friend of mine in the air conditioning business has mentioned. I would like to be able to clean it without breaking into the system.

Do you think there is sufficient access by removing the blower motor?

Thanks for any insight,
Sam

Passenger side top is where the most build up is located. I would suggest try pulling the fan and cleaning trick.

Why do you go and show us pictures like these....it scares the rest of us with less than perfect air-flow!

Good job though...looks like that thing needed some love...
