Found a 79 300CD, Need info..........

(Had to correct the post. It is an 79 model not an 84)

I found a really decent white 79 300CD for sale locally. It was an Arizona car and looks pretty good. It has 167K on it. The old lady who has it just had it worked on. It wouldn't shut off so she had that fixed, The valves adjusted. Glowplugs fixed, Oil changed in the engine and trans. She is asking $2200 which seems like a good price. My question is will i be dissapointed after driving the 2 300SD's i had getting into a non-turbo Benz especially out here in Montana? The wife will be using it for a work car and has to go through a 6000' pass every day. We live at 4900' Is it going to be a gutless wonder going up the grade??

The 84 300CD should be a 617 turbo. Is this a US spec car? Assuming it is a turbo (with a strong engine), it will do fine in the hills.

Get your ass over there right now and BUY IT.

She probably doesn't know it has a turbo.

(If you don't, I will. )

A 79 300CD will be a non-turbo engine. I'm sure there are folks here who have experience with them at 6000 feet.

I'm no diesel expert... but from the little knowledge I have, putting a turbo to a non-turbo engine could reduce the engine life. I'll let the "dieselers" answer this one.

I wondered if it would be possible on a benz. I did one on my old 6.9L Ford without issues.

You can't install a turbo on a non-turbo engine. It will melt the pistons in short order as soon as the exhaust temperatures rise. The turbo engine has a multitude of advancements including oil jets on the underside of the pistons to cool them.

Of course, you could find a 617 turbo engine and exchange engines for not too much cost.

Yep, don't even ponder on "simply bolting a turbo" on that NA OM617. Grave consequences can occur - my friend overseas did this and boy! did he regret it! If you can - post pics of that '79 300CD - let's see how nice it is!

So is $2200 still a good price for a non-turbo?

It's a great price for a CD, turbo or not. These are rare cars. Of course, I'm assuming that it has no rust and not too many mechanical issues.
