85 300D axle, what models will work?

Going to the local Pick N Pull tommarrow for a walk about (1/2 off sale).
I have a RR axle that's bad.
Thought I'd take a look there before I order two.
What models will work?
I don't expect to find anything worth pulling, but just incase....

stay with your bodystyle and you will be ok.
If you have a 123 then:
I believe any 123 sedan/wagon would interchange. So a 300D, 300CD,300TD, 240D. For sure, not familiar with what gasser's are the 123 style. All of the above are pre '86 cars.

On a 126, the same applies, such as a 300SD, 300SDL, and all the gasser rigs that I dont know any thing about..

What model car are you shopping for?

Was wondering if other models might work?

In the W123 chassis, SI models including 250, 230E, 280E were available in Australia, perhaps in USA too? These did have different diff options also.

Went to PNP this morning, no good looking axles.
Guess I'll look for rebuilds.
Maybe CVJ axles, are they as good as OEM's, I don't want to replace them but once??
Thanx for the help!

how can you tell by looking at them, if they are any good or not?

It is my understanding (and belief) that 'rebuilt' axles are not necessarly as trouble free as the bright clean box that they come out of might imply. much has been writen about that subject with each individual getting to make their own choice as to what to do..

Well...
When the boots are torn or cracked that may be one way, as was the situation at PNP today.

I did research axles on this forum, with mixed results on the solution.
And your thoughts or recommendations are?

I am not spending no stinking $700 for axles, but want something reliable.

I am unimpressed with rebuilds... too many stories about replacing them a short while afterwards... I found some used axles with 120K on them in a salvage yard by looking up car-part.com and browsing. 120.00 including delivery. I guess I will take the chance..

the boots

seem to last a long time even when they have shallow checking on them\\

personally i have replaced through the years prob 6 axle assemblies. the first one about ten years ago was used. the rest have been rebuilts. no problems so far. i am not sure where my indie gets them.

they are about 100 though for parts.

Also think that using the axle on the opposite side of the car from where it was taken from the donor car can be helpful. Since there is only one part for right & left, seems like they would have a whole lot more life if rotated in the opposite direction for a few K-miles. Of course the subject axle would need to have intact boots and not show evidence of oil or grease leaks.
