Thumbs up Injector testing

One of our new members has setup an injector testor and has graciously offered to test injectors for members at a cost of $3. per injector .

His contact name is buyabsellonebay.

I've added this to the tool rental program for future reference.

Does this service include any adjusting of them or just telling how they are currently?

I had some minimal correspondence via PM. I did not get the details. However, if the nozzle requires replacement, the cost, naturally, will be more.

Send him a PM and check it out.

How and why would injector nozzles require replacement? I have access to a plethora of 617 injectors in case of that situation but am curious.

Reason I'm interested in this is I recall reading that balanced injectors and a higher pressure for delivery makes the vehicle run better.

I'm no expert on them, but, they can wear with age and provide a poor spray pattern. So, they have to be changed in this case.

I'm sure he will balance all five for the price of $3.00 each.

Send him a PM and get the details. If it works out, it seems like he'd be a valuable resource for everybody.

In fact, I should send him mine. They are sitting on the shelf waiting for the head to return.

Hrm... isn't it a 27mm to remove the injectors from the cylinder head?

Yep.......you need a deep socket, however.

Do you happen to know if it's an MB specific tool or something I could scoop up used at a pawn shop or an online fleamarket like ebay?

Any deep socket will work.

Sorta true...

We have a 27mm standard deep and it doesn't work.
Dad has a special 27mm socket just for injectors....its EXTRA deep (those little return line hose barbs + tall injector = need for DEEP socket.

I think it depends on how deep the 12 points are. If the 12 points extend up about 1/2 way and then the socket narrowes down to accommodate the tip of the screw, then it will never work.

The 12 points need to go the full length of the socket to allow clearance for the return nipples.

Yep.
I think on the average most sockets don't run full length.

So anyone looking for one...make sure you take a close look before purchase.

someone explain to me what setting up of the injectors means....if i would go and buy brand new injectors that are meant for my car, can i not just put them in? what needs to be set up? is it like a spark plug that requires gapping or calibrating?

The injectors all have a tolerance for pop pressure. Ideally every one of them fires at exactly the same pressure. Then, relative to the engine timing, each cylinder is getting fuel at exactly the same time.

But, factory tolerance being what they are, the pressures vary by 200 psi across brand new injectors. If someone wants to spend the time, I believe that they can get them all within 30 psi, if they are careful.

My 27mm socket is from a set I bought at Sears. My mistake that I assumed any deep socket would work.

Wade:

You should make sure you get the correct injector for your vehicle. BAR pressure is stamped on the injector.

In addition they should have a good spray pattern and pop within 2 BAR of each other. This is what you look for when you test and calibrate.
They should also hold pressure and not leak.
