Thanks for the post on my previous thread. Will let you know how next week's service helps out.
Another question: The speedometer and odometer on my "new" 1980 300d (non-turbo) is way out - at least 10% - maybe more. Eg. keeping up with someone going 30 mph - mine reads 40+. The tranny was changed a few years ago, but I checked the number on it, and it is the right tranny for the car. Any ideas on this one? |

Sorry but I have no idea on how to fix it personally. I have a similar problem (but mine reads about 10 mph slower than what I am actually doing). Not too long ago my odometer was stuck so we pulled it out... had it cleaned and serviced... PROBLEM (should of had the speedometer checked at the same time). Service cost about $75

What year car is the replacement tranny from? Also, what is the speed range indicated on your speedo? I think it should be 0 to 110. I am not sure, but I think for '81 and '82 only, the speedo only went up to 85mph, but after '83, the range went back to around 110mph. Maybe you have the wrong speedo for the replacement tranny. I put a 110 mph speedo from a '79 into my car and when I was driving at an indicated 75mph, I was really doing 80mph. I know because the cop said so.

You are quite correct SW. My speedometer goes up to 85mph. Luckily, it was my brother pointing out the problem and not the Highway Patrol.

Just checked my speedo. It goes from 0 - 125mph!! It is from a 123 body (per the small number at the bottom of the speedo) -- but maybe it's from a gas car?? Interesting - I wonder how many miles this car really has on it!!
I don't know what year of car the tranny came from - but would this matter if it's the correct serial #?? 722.118 I think. |

Speedo's on MB are calibrated to the rear axle ratio! If you think its wrong then have it re-calibrated by speedo(VDO) shop. Make sure to include the rear end ratio & TIRE size!

Thanks DOC,
I just found the following website. http://www.paspeedo.com/calculator.htm By putting in my stock tire size and the size of the tire I actually have (185R14 vs 195/75R14) it says when my gauge reads 70 mph, I am actually travelling close to 79 MPH!!! Is it worth adjusting the speedometer for my new tire size? |

I pulled my needle off and reset it so that the speedo is accurate at 60 mph. After messing with the needle I took it back to a shop to verify how close I got it. With their machine turning the rear wheels at 60 mph my speedometer reads 59 mph.
