another a/c question
My 1981 240D has been converted to R134. The a/c blows very cold. Lately, in the oppressive Alabama heat, I've noticed drops of water shooting out of the center vents. This happens mainly after I've turned the car around a curve or intersection, but is starting to happen more regularly. The a/c hasn't lost any flow or coolness, but i don't really like drops of water hitting me in the face when i drive down the road.
I've searched the forums but haven't found any conclusive answers. Your help is appreciated.

Your condensate drain(s) might be obstructed.

Wait a minute, now I remember!
There is a small rubber tube in the center console that runs down to the transmission hump. This is the condensate drain.
Scroll to the bottom of this link and it will show you how to access the evaporator.. http://dieselgiant.com/mercedes_diesel_maintenance_tips.htm |

here's a dumb question
but here goes,
is that inside or outside the car? I climbed under it today and couldn't find it. Probably looking in the wrong place. Forgive the "newb-ness" of the question... I've only had it for 1500 miles.

It is inside the car... I think the link mentioned is not for a 123 auto like yours...
Your interior AC and Heat fan is located just above the passenger ankles... and the box the evaporator is in goes from there towards the drivers feet... at the hump there should be a drain from that black box to the outside of the car.. |

Being your 240D is a manuel transmission, feel between the transmission bell housing and transmission hump. You should feel a piece of foam tubing near the center of the hump. This is your evaporator drain, and connects to the evaporator housing inside the car. Remove the drivers underdash panel and look behind the center console. The foam tube will attack to the drain. Replace it with a piece of copper pipe insulation wrapped in electrical tape. The insulation is available from a hardware store, usually in three foot lengths. There is not much room to work, the drain coming off the evaporator housing is molded into the housing itself.
Rubber tubes were used on later models. You could easily use a piece of rubber tubing, just make sure to seal around the opening to keep the weather out. Alan |
