Damn that car has a lot of blowby...oil is ALL OVER the place...
Gotta clean that up really good.

Your shifter looks just like mine...mutilated.
Now its time to get some pictures of the undercarriage for us to assess the rust situation.

Look for a Group 49 battery, available at AutoZone for about 75 bucks-

group 49 is a size designation that several makers have chosen to build to fit the Mercedes battery tray. it's longer and skinnier than most other batteries, and it needs the cold cranking amps needed to get a diesel started.

Or, don't listen to me and go waste your time measuring other batteries to see if they will fit.

Temporarily a car battery that fits and doesn't stress the cables can be put in until you have funds to get the right one.

My 240D has a odd sized battery in it for the time being until I can afford the right one or someone wants to buy one for it. It works okay but if it gets cold or the engine doesn't decide the start off quickly...you will need that extra juice from the right sized battery...

Canadian tire does not list or supply type 49 batteries as you have found out. But the napa auto parts chain in canada does have two type 49 available. A cheapie? for a little over a hundred canadian and a better one for about 150 canadian. The prices and conversation took place about a year ago with napa. If you know anyone travelling south of the border a good 1000 amp battery is available from autozone made by a good battery supplier for them. Have heard prices as low as 50 american on this item but may have increased to 75 as one poster mentioned. Prices change unfortunatly but the autozone battery is a good one made by johnson controls i believe. You may get something else to fit but the type 49 is a very low profile battery. I have never seen another battery type anything close in size with any real capacity but I might have missed it. While waiting for your haynes manual if you can get the car safely high enough to get underneath comforatably a visual inspection of the linkage may be of some help. I guess it's even possible a shift rod may have come off or got bent. Also you may be able to remove one shift rod at a time from the transmission linkage and try to move the tramsmission arm. That should allow you to separate the fault into the transmission or the linkage at least. With the linkage arm off you should be able to move the linkage to find out if it is jammed if the transmission arm moves. Also I am quite sorry as thought you were really just kidding around earlier. The best of luck with the car. Go slow and safely as you work at it and remember you can quite often find the problem by looking and using your hands to move things once you have decided what should move and if it does or does not that is an important clue.

I'm still not buying the poor spelling thing, but just in case:

http://www.iespell.com/

It is a great spell checker that works with Int. Expl.
You just right-click after you type, and it will point you to your corrections. Of course, that would "ruin the bit".

For Batteries, I've had good luck with these Korean made batteries that a local battery shop carries. The nice part is that they are totally sealed, so no leaking at the vent caps at the top...

in the shifter. just put some oil in there. the levers below are subject to rust damage. so see if anything is siezed up there.

I'm not buying the poor grammar thing either. OTOH it is a source of laughter.
