strange + scary RPM-related vibration

so my '80 300TD doesn't seem to have any transmission problems, and the motor-mounts have been replaced pretty recently and appear to be in great shape.
BUT when driving there is this pretty serious SHUDDER / vibration that varies with the RPM's / speed. a little noticible around town and VERY noticable on the freeway.
at first i thought it was a tire/wheel/axle or something, but the shudder stops when you take your foot off the gas, and gets faster as you accelerate. you can FEEL it, and the sound is like: wooomb, woomb, woomb. can't really tell where it's coming from, though.
any ideas what it could be? those little motor shocks? or a bent or unbalanced shaft or something?

sometimes

a wagon will resonate with unusual vibrations that you would never hear in a sedan. it might not be much of a problem, depending on how loud it is. you dont have a window open do you?

There was a posting last spring about a similar problem in a wagon. It was a rear wheel bearing.
