What's this.......87 300SDL

Inspecting hoses and vac lines and I see this. Notice that the top of the rubber fitting is cracked. What does this do? Located near the rear of the IP at what I think is the shutoff??

Thanks,

Clay

I believe each of these cars are the final production year for that model.

vac

thats a vacuum elbow and it being cracked is causing you
a small vac problem... and it can effect your engine performance
and even your door locks and so on...

the elbow is probably 3 dollars...pulls right off easily.

hose

the shutoff is higher uo on the pump, right next to the alda, the hose does not show up in mercedes parts cataloge, the unit it is attached to is for transmission control, is there enough of the hose that is goo to cut it and expose a part that is not damaged?

That hose is the vent for the transmission vacuum signal modulator at the IP. The black hose joins other black hoses and goes a few inches into the cabin to terminate. Don't worry about it.

My favorite answer! Thank you very much.

Would it follow that all of the solid black lines in the engine compartment are for venting?

Thanks,

Clay

The factory intent is that black lines are vents. Check the vacuum line diagram in the sticky section. How many hands have been on these cars over the last 100-200-300K miles?

Door locks are on a different system on the SDL. The vacuum pump for them is in the trunk.

A W126 300SD has the same vacuum pump arrangement as a 300SDL. Vacuum problems can't cause engine problems in these cars. At most they cause shut-off and shifting problems... less likely that in W123s and W116s because central locking is on a separate circuit.
