Gauge Cluster Removal - 1988 190D

Hi all. I'm new to the forum, and I am really excited to be a member. Anyway, my odometer stopped working this past weekend, and I already did a search and I think I know how to fix it. However, I don't know how to remove the gauge cluster. I own a 240D and removing the gauge cluster for that was easy and rather straght forward, but the 190D looks different.

Has anyone had experience removing the gauge cluster from a 190D? If so, how did you do it? I appreciate your response. Thanks!

Same as a 240D with a little less space. Use hooks to get it out or push from behind.

I just took mine off the other day, what you need to do is take off the steering wheel which is only one bolt. I also went underneath the car and removed the speedometer cable from the transmission. If you do not remove the cable you might stretch it and that would not be a good thing.

Gauge cluster removal

I disagree with that. I just removed my 86 190D cluster last weekend. There is no reason to take the steering wheel off whatsoever. Just take the covering under the dash off, then the knee bolster. It is a tight fit, but you can get your hand behind the cluster and unscrew the speedometer cable. Then simply push the cluster forward.
The easiest way is to use hooks and simply pull from the front. This has to be done carefully so you don't screw up the speedo cable. Frankly, if you use pliers (taped up so they don't mar the plastic) you can just pull from the edge of the cluster. This will take about 5 seconds.

Taking off the steering wheel takes less than a minute since it is just one bolt. It gives you 10 times the room to work with when the wheel is gone.

You don't need to go under the dash for the speedo. Just remove the left side vent, push back the connecting tube and reach in to disconnect the speed cable. You need a small hand but it makes it easy. My 91 has a electronic oil pressure gauge, check yours.

interesting technique. how do you get the air tube back on; since you are limited with your speedo cable length using your method.
