Any Biocide experience
I may have to clean fungus out of my 20 yr. old 300D fuel tank.
(Now running blend of RUG /WVO, and primary filter gets clogged to quickly with black rubbery looking gunk. So does anyone have any experience using any Biocides to clean out crap from their fuel tanks??? Thanks,

Worked fine for me. I waited till I had about five gallons in the tank and poured in a whole bottle of the stuff. I took the car out for a short hard drive to make sure it go a good mixing-up. I parked the car and waited over night. Next day I siphoned off the remaining fuel and replaced it with 5 gal. of fresh stuff. Drove straight to the mechanic and had the strainer removed and cleaned. Oh yeah, it’s best done in warm weather.
If you do have a bug infection the die-off can be massive. All that dead stuff will cause havoc with your filters and injectors.

My 300SD had a tank full of fungus when I bought it. Drove 300 miles home at a top speed of 65 mph, due to the clogged filters. Cleaned out the tank when I got home, replaced the filters and put some biocide in the tank. 10K later, no fungus among us. I put biocide in the tank maybe every couple of months, but have had no recurrence of the problem.
My method: I took the strainer out of the tank and let the fuel drain. I then put 5 gallons of lacquer thinner in the tank and let it sit for a couple of hours. Drained the thinner, let it settle and poured it straight through again. Did this several times until it appeared that no more fungus was coming out. I then put everything together and drove. No problems since then. Good Luck, Tom

My second SD had black particles in the prefilter. Diesel Doktor (sp?) cleared it for a few months. A second dose cleared it for longer but it still came back. Smythe European (MB dealer) in San Jose, CA used to carry it but not for a couple of years now.
How about Tinactin or Lotramin? Sixto 95 S420 87 300SDL |

in my
experience the biocide did the trick wo removing anything. put it in let it set over night, presto clean tank. maybe different brands or not a bad case of fungi.

I don't have any links handy right now, but when I researched this a year or so ago, I found the best real-world information was found on marine (boating) sites. There are significant differences in the way different brands work. For example, the old Diesel Doctor was reported to only kill bugs in fuel and not touch bugs in water, which is why the problem comes back in a few months. I would start by searching on West Marine. Look up the different brands found there and then research those individually.
