240D...ant 5 cyl engine...

Anyone ever convert the 240 from a 4 banger to the 5cykl(603) used in the SD and 300D?

Is it very difficult? Are there lots of alterations?

Lastly. is the engine the only difference between the 240 and 300D?

That littel car would be quick with the 5cyl and the 4 speed, although I think some modification in the rear end might be in order. It seems like the stock rear end in the 240 seems to hold it back, almost as if it needs a 5th gear.

Thanks

yeah

some of us have converted 240s to 5 cyl. i have done two. one 115 body and one 123. the shells are 99.999% identical, so the parts pretty much bolt in. to do it correctly it is best to start with two mechanically complete cars. you need to change the rad, eng, speedo, tranny (optional), driveshaft and rear end and exhaust. there is a engine shock bracket that has to be fabricated. otherwise it is all bolt in. mine is a non turbo 617. others have done the turbo motor, which of course has more power. but my car with a 3.08 rear end from the turbo cars will get 30 mpg at 70 mph and will go 100 mph. it is a lot of work but not bad if you are starting with a car with a bad motor.
