Talking BIG success with Tranny Mount!!

Well I managed to get the old (twisted, mangled, dead, soft as butter) tranny mount off, then I installed the new one, it was pretty easy, just annoying, and I had to kick my 19mm wrench to break loose that hard to get at upper bolt. Well, I drove it around my street and did many stops, not a single shudder or vibration!!!!! ALSO, my side to side rackdamperish shaking is also gone! Its steady as a rock! I also changed my air filter, and once it cools off I am changing out my lower cooling hose for a new one that has a spiffy block heater spliced into it. Its so nice to have that shuddering gone...

Lucky You, Good to know. Wish my Diesel would have quite it's vibrations. I don't have Elbow Grease that good, 110lbs can only turn a minor nut or bolt.

don't you just love it when you fix something and it works properly ? I was this excited when I unplugged my EGR and the car felt like a different vehicle.

Update: Still have some vibrations slowing down, I assume its the center bearing.... I guess I'll have it fixed later on at the dealer....I don't think I'd be able to do it.

Do you mean the dirveshaft bearing ? I was wondering this myself if it would be tough to do....

I assume to do this I need to:

Remove Exhaust pipes
Remove shaft tunnel cover
somehow undo the flex discs/driveshaft/etc...
remove center bearing stuff...
reinstall center bearing stuff....
Put flex discs back in
attempt to line up shaft as was marked again and bolt back in

I am puzzled by where the shaft connects to the tranny....there is that Giant round flywheel looking thing that seems to be part of the shaft itself? then it goes to the center bearing....then to the differential/flex disc....?

I still don't think I would be able to do this very easily....I'm paranoid working on things like that.

Really shouldn't be that hard. I just lowered the exhaust system on my 560SEL when I did the flex couplings. 560SEL exhaust system is HUGE. Then the tunnel cover came off pretty easy. I used a worn smooth pipe wrench to loosen the 46mm nut on the center of the drive shaft. Collapsed the shaft and pried the couplings out. On my '83 300D I replaced the whole driveshaft. Then I had to remove the e-brake cable. Biggest trick for replacing the center bearing would probably be pressing/pounding the bearing onto the driveshaft.

My other problem is that I have no lift or even a suitable jack stands setup to work on the car that way, definatley not equipped for that job. Plus I lack several of the tools I'd need to work on the bearing and that giant nut you mentioned....my largest wrench is a 27mm for the oil cooler lines......that thing set me back $18!! Also since this is a job that will need to be done on this car maybe once? twice? (hoping for 800k+ on this car) Its not worth it to buy all the tools I'd need to do that. For now I think I will live with it.....I just don't understand why the ONLY time it shudders or vibrates is 3 out of 5 times when I slow down between 20mph and 16mph.....wouldn't it shudder when the shaft is spinning much faster? Such as when I pushed it to 115mph or so a couple weeks ago? I had NO vibrations at any speed up till that point, and when I let back off right away and coasted for a while to slow down it didn't either. I just don't get it. It can't be the 4->3 downshift either, because if I manually do it long before 20mph, or just am using 3rd to begin with, it still shudders often when slowing. I've even tried downshifting all the way, 4-3-2-1 with the selector...still does it. Tranny mount and engine mounts are all new now.....I thought a bad carrier bearing assembly produced vibrations when driving at higher speeds??? I also put in a new rack damper bolt, it did remove most shake (still ever so slight, barely noticeable) but the shuddering stayed pretty much the same, and its not the engine, if I shut it off and stop by coasting, it STILL shudders....except then it feels like its right next to/under me, instead of going through the entire car. Help?

In addition to what I posted above, are these the correct parts that I would need to completely renew the driveshaft-locale of parts that can wear out:

-DriveShaft Bushing

-DriveShaft Support

-DriveShaft Support Bearing

-DriveShaft Support Boot

-Flex Disc (2 of them)

These are all the parts I would need right? The total for all these on fastlane is $184.29. Are Lemfordor or Febi flex discs better, lemforder is $51 and febi are $44.....

My plan is to just get the parts, then look into having them put in by the dealer, I'm willing to pay for a couple hours or so of labor to have it done.

I am still wondering (see above post) why the car only vibrates in that one 4mph slot, and nowhere else...it just seems very odd....
