Now that the rainy season in the Pacific Northwest is fast approaching...

We've had an incredibly warm and dry summer up here in the great northwest, but rain is in the air and it's time to re-visit the leak problem I have in the trunk!
The trunk gasket looks solid, so the next easiest fix is to replace the gasket surrounding the antenna. Do I have to remove the antenna to do this? Is the gasket replaced from the outside or do I have to contort myself inside the truck to change it? Is this gasket something I can buy online?
The next fix would be to change the back window gasket...If that is the case, I think I'll stuff a rag in the wheel well (Driver's side) and call it good. Or maybe drill a drainage hole-anyone ever done that?

Antenna grommets are easy to replace. Just order them from here or the dealer. Yes, you have to pull the antenna out. Biggest pain is removing the panel covering it. Just be gentle. Sometimes it helps to remove the inside portion of the left taillight assembly. Antenna comes out with only a couple of screws/10mm bolts and two cables. Push old grommet out and then collapse new grommet like a flattened paper towel tube , stuff it in the fender and position it so the lip makes a good seal. When I reinstall the antenna, I usually put a dab of silicone grease on the ball of the antenna that fits into the grommet. Helps with the seal and installation.
To troubleshoot water leaks in trunk, I find a friend I REALLY trust. I climb in trunk with flashlight and close the lid tight. Have friend hose down the truck and back window really heavy. Not hard stream, just lot of water. Watch for leaks. This may lead you to replacing the rear window gasket and maybe some body work back there. Need to keep the trunk dry. It will rust eventually if you don't.

I found it was my rear window seal. It drips right on the fenderwell. went to the local glass shop and had them shoot some goop around the corners and bingo....no more leak! My gasket looks terrible too but I'm not replacing it unless I have to.

Cheers,

Bill

Also check your tailight seals everyone.
I had a loose light setup (from doing some work to them) and one was leaking something furious.

On a w123 or w126 body, the trunk area drains right onto the light and if the seal isn't good...you get a waterfall inside the car

Simple solution...

Where is our rain? My driveway is even dusty and its only 50feet long.
