603 engine manifold replacement
RE: 1987 300TDT - I have to replace the exhaust manifold on this car. Pretty straight forward although I've never done one before. I do have an acetylene/oxygen torch and a very good assortment of tools etc. What can I expect to happen when removing this? I am expecting the studs to snap off as I turn the nuts off each one. Anything else?

No problems on the SDL back at 260K miles. The worst that happened is that some studs came off with the nuts.
Keep an eye on the turbo oil feed line. It kinks very easily. I'd take it off and store it before doing anything else. Dont forget the clamp at the #4 runner. You'll need a new gasket between the oil feed line and the turbo. It's really easy to replace the thermostat with the turbo out. Sixto 95 S420 87 300SDL |

You, like myself and many others, may break the last stud along the firewall. I did, in fact I think mine was already broken and just barely being held in the hole. My manifold was warped so I had it planed then all was well again. It seems that the manifolds warp back there and stretch out that last stud which makes it break VERY easily. I don't think you'll have a problem with the others as no one else on here has said anything about it and many members have done headjobs so it's unlikely.
Thanks David

I had one stud strip the aluminum threads and did a heilicoil rethread, it worked fine.

That's a relief to hear. The only problem now is the price. These manifolds are upwards of $700...

Why would the manifold need to be replaced? Is it cracked? If it's warped it can be ground down and if it's cracked perhaps it could be welded? I'll bet that you can find a used one. Do a search in the part discussion for 300SDL parts car. I remember a couple people in the past few months parting out SDL's.
Thanks David

A mechanic in Maryland told my sister that the "manifold has pinholes in it and needs to be replaced". By early next week I will verify that myself. It may very well be a gasket. My sister told me that when she drives it, the car is a little louder and there is an odor of diesel fumes that is strong.
