Robby,

You were dead-on with your suggestion. I did some searches earlier and did just that. I cleared the two lines, but when I tried to blow through the valve on the firewall, absolutely nothing went through. That valve was completely plugged. I bypassed it and took it for a 0-60 run. This time I got to 60 in 18 seconds. That's quite an improvement. That's the best it's run since I've owned it. I think now I need to properly adjust the fuel injection pump timing. When I first got the car, a friend toyed with it and got it running slightly better, but now that the real problem has been solved, don't you think I ought to adjust it with the drip method? Also, on your previous post, you mentioned you had "old timing chain." Is that actually the original timing chain?
Thanks a lot for your help.

Mike

I think the 0-60 time for that car is around 14 seconds. I know the 1980 300 SD is 16 seconds as per the owners manual, a 300 TD (wagon) is closer to 20 sec. That page referred to above seems highly inaccurate for mpg figures and 0-60 times!

Greg,

You're right -- I since talked to someone who had an old spec sheet from the factory. The 300D turbo went in just about 14 seconds.

Guys, 14 sec. sounds slow to me! I had mine tweaked a little bit and now it will fly! I do not know what he did but it drives like a gas car now. I beleive the fuel pump was opened up a little or something. I will try mine out tonight on the way home and see what she will do.

0-60 times for 300D turbo

Joe,

I'd be interested in what your time is. I've read that you can adjust the boost via the wastegate. Also, supposedly, you can adjust the fuel delivery (ALDA) to smooth out the on again/off again jerkiness of the turbo power.

Here's an article on turning up the boost. I was thinking about turning my boost up and adjusting the ALDA, but I decided not to. I figure that the extra 2-3 second gain in acceleration isn't worth the cost of a new engine.

0-60 in 29 seconds???
I don't know where you live (i.e if you have other cars around you when you drive!!), but that car would be undriveable here in So. Cal. You'd have people on your tail, honking, flashing lights, waving fists, maybe pulling guns every time you tried to get away from a stoplight or merge onto a freeway!
It just doesn't seem possible to drive a car *that* slow on public streets without being a rolling hazard!

0-60 times for 300D turbo

Brian,

Believe me, I didn't drive it on a regular basis. I did the 0-60 timing on a rural road late at night (no other traffic around). That car was way to slow out on the streets. I tried taking it on the streets once and had to make sure there were no cars coming for a good three blocks before I made turn. It was absolutely dangerously slow. Believe it or not, the guy who I bought it from drove it daily in that condition for about two months! The "expert Mercedes mechanic" he took it to diagnosed it as a bad injection pump, but the problem was a $14 clogged switchover valve. It runs great now.

Speedy - thanks for the link. I'm a little wary of messing with the ALDA, too.

Mike

oops, didn't realize this was a 2 page thread, so when I responded I didn't see your update.
Sounds like you might have got a great deal on the car!

How are you reading those runs? O-60 runs should be done on an empty road both ways and averaged. Also you need to measure them with a stop watch and really should use a GPS because the speedometer is probably off a bit.
