Odometer!!!

the odo in the 240 has been testy for a month or so. It rolls fine, but every now and again it sticks when it gets to XX9.9 miles. Btw, I am referring to the trip meter, not the gross mile meter.

When the trip meter sticks, the big odometer stops working as well. Most of the time I can fix it just by resetting the trip meter...sometimes that doesn't work, and it refuses to start registering miles until I've stopped paying attention to it, and have driven however many miles down the road.....I think that it's gotten away with at least 500 miles just by doing this...and when your mercedes is less than 2k from rolling over the BIG 2, every miles counts.

Anyway...is there anyway that I can fix this? Because it still works, it just sticks...maybe an inexpensive solution, like some kind of lubricant or something I need to tweak. That statement was an innuendo... ;)

This topic is covered thoroughly in the archives. Yes you can fix it. It's a bit tedious and you should read the threads of those who have done it.

Well, you have a 50/50 chance on that odometer. I just had the same problem; and fix. Check what the procedure tells you, but you'll notice that the gear that is focused on does infact turn the trip od via another gear. My problem was the trip od gear at the bottom was stripping; ie a few teeth coming out and that causes the top gear to stick. no mileage anymore. You can still "glue" the top gear, as I did, but it won't fix your problem if your trip od is starting to strip; (mileage turns then gets stuck; jiggle; then starts again) If it is your trip od gear, you would notice the sticking around a certain number every time.

My soln. Since I don't have junk yards available. I opted to give up the trip od for a while (kill it) so that I could keep the od running. I "killed" it via the dremel tool taking the rest of the teeth off. Later, I'll pick up another od for the little white "spring loaded" gear on the trip od and fix it.

It meant YESSSS!!! as in I got the response I was expecting;

"search the forums noob!"

I thought that completely non-functional odo's and trippy/finicky odo's were two different problems with two different solutions. Guess I was wrong, mang! :cowboy:

I'll tear the cluster out on thursday after class...it's the only day this week when I won't have work.
