I have a 550gal tank for diesel and 250gal tank for gas. All the fittings have been welded on and they are locked. My driveway is about 800' long. I have lots of time to breath steady and aim true. If the trash wants to steal some, Well.... Bring it boys. Had a few try during the Northeastern Ice Storm in winter of 1998. Seveteen days with no power up here. Few stations were open and most were out of fuel. It was a little ugly.

That's why I mow the grass around my tanks. Gotta keep those kill zones open.

So how do you like having a fill up station at your house? Worthwhile investment?

550 gallons would be nice. 25 fillups (22 gallons a shot) X 600 miles per tank (conservative estimate) = 15000 miles. I wouldn't have to refill such a tank for a year. Can diesel sit for that long?

You have the right idea BUT it is 1K per gallon the tank you got it from holds. I had a Uncle that got in trouble after putting 5 gallons of farm diesel in a semi that had run out on the side of the road. When the guy came out to the farm to assess the fine he asked " So which SMALL tank did you get it out of? "

I would be more worried about your state then the feds when it comes to road taxes. I looked up the oregon's tax law on dyed fuels and the fine is either $10 per gallon or $1000, whichever happens to be higher. (most states have very similar laws although our fines seems lower than most) We had a friend in eastern Oregon who bought dyed diesel at Pacific Pride which tracks all your untaxed diesel. Well Oregon noticed that his use was way higher than would typically be used in tractors. They dipped his truck's tank and he got a $4000 or so fine. The feds never got involved. It seems likely the feds won't get involved unless the abuse is blatant and in huge excess.

If you are in the city limits you might want to check the local building codes about storing volatile liquids above ground. The chances are good that even if you are outside the city limits and want to store it underground you will have to get atleast a county and probably a state premit. Read as lots of paper work.

The state and fed regs about underground fuel storage is so complicated and tight and therefore expensive that it just isn't worth the effort.

But wait until they try and nick some gas for their ricer from the mystery fuel in my wagon's tank; I'll laugh my ass off that day. I wonder what straight WVO does to a gasser's EFI system?

If you're like me you never know what is in there. Most of the time the fuel for my three 130 hp tractors is black from used crankcase oil. Could be some WVO too.

Me too...
I wanna see someone dip my tank and dump it in their car (even though the door locks). Then I'll come outside, phone in hand, and follow them down the road until they break down. Then I will take the survalence video from outside my house, hand it to the police and say, handle it.

Course knowing the cops around here. I would get a ticket for some BS like putthing too thick of fuel in my car and thus damanging the theives automobile.

At that point...my microwave magnetron with a open ended waveguide would be put into heavy use

I love having fuel at home. I am always prepared for snow storms, power outages, you name it. I always have fuel for my snowplow truck. It is easy to track what I spend on fuel. Diesel can sit for many years. I save a lot of money but I work for a fuel delivery company. My employee discount is considerable. My wife and I put atleast 50,000 mi on the war wagon last year. With the prices the way they are I am going to cut out road trips across the East. If I am lucky my tank will make it till spring.
