I might have found a deal....or not

I live in a very rural area with several 10 car used car dealers and such but there is one that always has an MB or BMW on the lot. A friend of mine was there so I stopped in and they had a 96 e300 td in a shed covered with dust with the head removed. Apparently someone that didn't know what they were doing and installed the cam incorrectly, witch led to valve crash and the whole nine yards. The pistons wre checked out and the head was rebuilt all it needs is new cams and that plasic thing that guides the timing chain. He will sell me the car for $6000 it has 60K miles and is in very good condition.

run or buy?

You need to proced with caution. If it was a cheap fix he would fix the thing and ebay it for $12k. If the car is in good shape and it really only needs a little more work to finish it then it could be a good buy. Who did the valve job? The problem with rebuilding MB's if you need to make sure the work was done at a shop capible of MB standards. If not the head may be crap even if it has been redone.

The local MB guy did the head job and said that the pistons looked ok, how much is a short block?

It could be a good deal. I think a short block for my 603 is like $4k, so a 606 can't be to far off.

Talk to Phil about the cam's I bet they are like $200-$300 each. The plastic part for the tensioner is probably cheap. If thats all it needs you could probably get it running for under $1k.

$7k for a 50k miles E300D is a great deal!

Remember when a deal seems to good to be true it usually is.
If this was such an easy fix the dealer would have it fixed,
STAY AWAY

Yea, I'm being careful this is a very small town population of 250 and everyone says hes pretty honest I think I might give it a shot, but I'm pricing a new short block first I might just go ahead and drop a new engine in it and call it good. I might be able to put the other engine together and sell it.

If it were down the street from me, I'd probably buy it.

REALITY CHECK...it's in the mail

MM, this car is best left to the diehard DIY types, not a guy who needs this thing on a daily basis and doesn't have time to stay on top of the little bugs that pop up on deals like this--btdt. I seriously don't think you'd be happy with an NA diesel anyway. Keep looking, the truth is out there...

From what I know of you, I don't believe you will be pleased with this vehicle.

It's a 1996 and it does not have a turbo, if I am correct. So, the acceleration will be "measured". Most of us would be fine with it. But, I don't think you will.

It's probably not worth rolling the dice and getting it in shape, only to sell it because it won't match your expectations.

The '98-'99 is a better choice.

Thanks, guys I'm going to take you advice and keep on searching for a 98-99. One good point is that I DRIVE, I need the stuff to work and the car to have no problems running 600-1000 Miles a week and some sheeeeeit and git won't hurt either.

If someone is interested in this car PM me and I'll help you in anyway I can short of buying it for you
