Anyone have a remote starter??

Does anyone have one installed on their Diesel? I talked to a shop today about getting one put in my 1990 350SDL, they werent sure If I would have a good glow plug light signal to trigger it, as they dont like using any timers for the signal.. Anyone know?

Zack

on remote start

I have a remote start in my car (it is actually out right now as unit was defective, would start engine, let it run about 30 seconds, then kill it.) Anyhow, mine doesn't have a glow input, just a "diesel mode" that waits 20 seconds. I found that on my car that is better as if you try to start the ol' girl right after light goes out, it runs rough and dies, but if you let it sit for say, 15-30 seconds after light goes out, she'll start and run great on the first try.

My main concern was the vacuum shut off, found an easy, stock way to fix that.

Use a vacuum solonoid from an 80's gasser (Emissions system). The controller for "ignition on" will vent vacuum to the shut-off, allowing it to start/run. If it wants to kill the engine automaticly (Example: Turbo Timer) it just turns off the voltage and vacuum will stop the engine.

Simple two-wires and most remote starts are set-up for gasser ignition systems anyway.

So I presume after you get in the car and turn the key/whatnot on the remote starter knows to disable its little vac setup so that the car can be shut down when the key is turned off?

Its actually a very good idea. I have oodles of those vac solenoids kicking around

auto start

i have a complete alarm system installed on my 79 300cd, 80 300td,85 300td and 83 300d. i opted for the viper(sorry can't remember model right know) it has lock/inlocked doors, motion/glass sensor, starter disable feature and the remote start(which is programmable on how long u want the engine to run). pretty nice set-up the remote comes with a small led screen. it also pages u if alarm is triggered.

The issue on the install was whether on not there was a wait to start wire that would work to trigger it... I.E. a signal when the GP light goes out. They said they have installed before with timers set at 10-20sec but that isnt a very good way to wire it and they prefer not too...

auto start

the viper that i have relies on the glow plug dash light(the yellow light on the lower right corner of the instrument panel).

I share

For me, the flat 20 sec delay is better as my glow light goes out too quickly.

My way of dealing with vacuum shutoff is as follows.

Take a vacuum change switch (runs ACC flappers) and glue a vacuum line in the vent hole in back. Connect this to the output of ignition switch (which originally went to shutoff valve). then, connect shutoff valve to side barb of changeover valve. Then, for the straight hose barb (opposite of the vacuum line you glued in), either plug it, or hook a vacuum gauge to it as I did. this is important as leaving it will dump alot of vacuum, creating an annoying sound and dangerous lack of vacuum (breaks won't work right). Electrically, I hooked the ground wire of the vacuum changeover valve to a good ground, and the hot to the engine ignition wire, which will be activated by both the key and remote start unit.

One thing, don't bypass the key switch. by running vacuum through both the electric valve and the key switch, if electric valve dies, you can still start, run, and shut off engine with key. In my case, when everything is off, vacuum flows from pump, to key switch, to changeover valve, to shutoff unit. therefore, the circuit only has to be broken at either the key or the changeover valve in order to keep engine running.

I can take pictures of this when I get my alarm back from the factory repair center. I don't feel like pulling the instrument cluster more times than neccessary.
