Transmission Problem??

I have an '83 240D and the problem I'm having is when I start to take off the transmission immediately shifts from 1st to 2nd and from 2nd to 3rd before I hit 15 mph. I'm in 4th by the time I hit 40 mph. Is this normal or is there something I can check to possibly fix this problem? Thanks!!

Where is the Bowden Cable located??

Thanks Pete, I will check the cable if you can tell me where to look and what to look for. Also, is it OK to put an additive into the transmission? Someone told me to pick up this product called Seafoam and add it to my transmission. Is this a good idea?

I've used trans-x but seafoam may be good too, I don't know. Search to find info on adjusting the trans first, make sure the fluid is good, etc. I may have misspoke on previous post. I don't know if your vehicle has an actual cable, or a rod. Anyway, the mechanism is similar - a mechanical linkage positions a spool valve in the valve body in proportion to throttle position. Start with slack just removed at idle throttle and adjust from there.
