Quote from STEALERship on work for my car....gah!

So I called the dealer, stealer, I mean, to ask for a quote on how much they'd charge for a valve adjustment, they wanted about $200 for the job. So I'll be doing that myself too, courtesy of the valve kit from **************, it includes the wrenches, and detailed instructions on doing it, and they include a gasket, so I should be fine there....

The Biggie was when I asked how much it'd cost to have the flex discs and center carrier bearing assembly replaced....he quoted $300 labor + parts...which would probably be another $175ish or more.....so it'd be a near $500 job! I am not capable (toolwise or liftwise etc...) to do that job, so I don't know, I don't want to pay that much. The parts alone from fastlane are only abou $168 or so for the whole job. I guess I will have to live with it for right now perhaps.

$200 for the valves if rediculous.

$300 for the flex disc and center bearing doesn't sound too bad.

She valves are easy. there are a few online manuals that have instructions for doing projects. You should always consult them before doing a project.
Do a search for manuals on this site.

Also a Haynes manual isn't a bad idea. It also tells you how to do basic maintenance procedures.

The 14mm wrenches from msource are too thick as they are. (The lock nut is thinner than the wrench.) I had to get one thinned by about 1/8 - 3/16 inch. Also, the silver paint they put on them to pretty them up will flake off into your engine. Real easy job though once I had the right tool! Remember, clockwise loosens.

The flex discs and center bearing don't sound too expensive. I had my indy completely replace my driveshaft w/U-joints, center bearing, and flex discs for $800.

I guess I'll just bite the bullet for the driveshaft work, but I'm definatley doing the valves myself. We have a haynes manual....I've found it rather unhelpful for most work I've done....I usually just refer to the MB factory diagrams...and thats good enough....we have the CD set. If the wrenches he sends have paint on them or are too thick I'll just fix that myself......I'm handy with a rotozip and/or dremel....can sand them and remove the paint in no time. Its a good deal even if I have to mess with them a little bit. Don't you also need a "feeler guage" or something for this job? It doesn't seem to be among the parts he includes to do it.....

I must admit....I paid the $200 to get my valves adjusted. I know, I know. But I just don't have time to mess with it.

If I were you I'd make sure and have the driveshaft problems taken care of ASAP. You oughta see what it does to the tranny tunnel when the front flex disc gives out. Do a search on flex discs and you'll see some pix of the damage that can occur. Not to mention the safety factor.

Cheers,

Bill

feeler gauge sets are available for just a few bucks. As for the driveshaft work, why not buy a few basic tools and do it yourself? There's lots of good info on this forum, and as jobs go, that one is not too tough. A lift would be nice I'm sure, but it's certainly not necessary.

Where can I get a feeler gauge? I don't see them on fastlane....

I also lack a lot of the tools that would be needed to do the driveshaft work. I don't have enough jack stands, my existing ones aren't very tall....it'd be pretty cramped under there, and dangerous....plus I'd need some mega wrenches and things for the giant bolts under there on the center of the shaft....which would add up pretty quickly in cost towards that $300.....the other thing is that I'd probably never use those tools and all that stuff again for ages to come, since its not exactly a job thats done very often....I also have no tools for getting the bearings/seals on properly or anything else like that. Overall the $300 looks to be worth it to avoid the potential costs of tools and hardships I'd encounter.

I would call them direct at Msource...if anything is missing or won't fit... They are v. nice people and promote that their tools are custom fit for the job.
PLease let us know how long the valve job takes you , if difficult at all, and how it works out as far as results...and how helpful the manual turns out...

right. Run, don't walk out of any auto parts store that doesn't have feeler gages. The only "unusual" tool you need for the driveshaft system is the wrench to the large nut on the spline collet near the center bearing. I "made" one by grinding some other old wrench I picked up free somewhere. But someone here must have a source for that. If you don't have a set of metric open end wrenches and allen bit drivers, buy some - they'll be useful in many other places on the car.

Holy crap! $200?!?! You could have bought THREE sets of valve adjustment wrenches for that!

Not if you charge $100.00 per hour.

Of course, you dont have big neon sign to light up....a/c for the 5 offices and staff of 20, 6 tech's, a shop with $555,000 of special tools, pay high insurance costs, have a 1.5 million stock of parts or 2 service cars for customers, cable tv in the waiting room with free coffee, 35 cars on the lot and liability insurance that would break a small city bank and 4 salesmen doing nothing most of the day !

How much was that Haynes manual ?
