Oil in coolant!!!!! What am I looking at $ wise
Well, the infamous #14 head has decided to let oil get into the cooling system on my wife's TD. I did the trick of squeezing the upper radiator hose when cold, and it sqeezed with no problem. So what am I looking at. Let's say it's the head gasket only, how much? BTW I am not messing with it, I'll be having someone else do the work. I know my limitations. On the more expensive end, let's say the head has to be replaced, what am I looking at. Then the BIG repair cost/car's value question. I'll be bringing it to the garage on Tues for them to check things out and give me an estimate. I have no evidence of coolant in the oil, or thick smoke coming out the tail pipe, just oil in the coolant. BTW this is on the '87 300TD

I would think that a good mechanic can R&R a 603 head in 9 hours. Figure another $250 for parts and miscellaneous BS (while you are at it). If you decide to do a valve job while the head is removed, figure another $300-$400.
But, if the head is cracked, you now must find another one. You could probably get another #14 head reasonably cheap ($300 or so), but, if you need to bite the bullet and get a new #22 head, you are looking at another $1200 or so. Could be more than this now. You would need to add some cost to transferring all the valves/prechambers/hardware, etc. to the new head. |
