85 300SD AC vents

I did a search and found a lot of info on this. But still a little confuesd, my question at this point is,
Everything seems to work except the center vents. BUT my AC is broken, If I place the ACC to max cool, I still do not get air out oc the AC vents. Is this broken, or because the air comming through the system is not cool eneough? And should it blow through these vents on the economy mode?

the ACC seems to be working fine, i think.
Thanks
Doug

Air should blow out the center vents if a/c is selected, regardless of whether the a/c actually works. Same with economy, unless the ACC thinks that it is in the heater mode. Most likely problem is a vacuum leak in the center vent actuator. Or a vacuum leak in the associated vacuum plumbing.

center vent pod seems like the most likely to fail, as it is right under the dash below windshield, which gets baked in the sun.

This seems to be a common problem, as all the pre 85 diesels I looked into buying had the same problem (except the 300D's). Is there a semi easy fix to this?

One option would be to manually reposition the flap so that the center vents work. Then turn the vents off individually when you don't want them to work.

Sorry for not knowing this, but where is this flap located? Can I access it through the vent itself?

Remove the glove box lining and look towards the middle dash area. Closest to the firewall/windshield area you will see a vac pod. coming from that is an actuator which heads towards the back of the center vent area. This actuator/arm is what pulls open the center vent flap. Find a way to wedge/secure this open. Not much room to work with under there.
Will search for thread with pics and attach it as an update....

Update......
Dash removal ---- Not That Bad

I did what you said. I made the actuator stay open by screwing a screw into the plastic box behind it. Although this did make more air blow out the vents on the side, the middle vent still will not blow. I looked inside the vent, and the controller is working as far back as I could see. Too bad I don't have Xray vision to see where the problem is!
