First time driving the MB floor shift 4-spd?

Otherwise of course you realize you've gotta pull the shifter straight up like yanking it out of the center console before moving it towards you and then forward to engage reverse gear.

I've got a 409d and can be a fount of wisdom to resolve your problems.
The reverse rod has almost certainly falled out the shift linkage. There is a rubber bushing and a clip which holds the rod in the linkage. These clips can easily fall off. A 'c' clip will work to hold the rod in position until you get the proper clip.
The best source of parts I know of is EuroCarParts in London.

No need to lift up the shifter on the truck transmission.
