Knock in 300 diesel

I have a knock in my 300 diesel. Today I cracked the fuel line going to the injectors one at a time. The noise did not go away. The noise seems to be high on the engine under the valve cover. It is a tin sound not a deep knock down in the engine. I did not have time to pull off the valve cover to see what it might be. I was just wondering if these engine ever have problems in the valve train. The engine has 240000 miles on it.thanks The engine does not have the power it should and unburned fuel fumes out the exhaust.

It may be simply a valve adjustment. Does it sound like a valve tap?

Now that I've given a possibly wrong answer I bet you'll get lots of replies.

Cheers,

Bill

well, easy to find out, just remove the cover and do an inspection while turning the engine by hand. It could be several things but no sense trying to guess.
When was the last valve adjustment?

Although you could of left a valve loose these engine usually tighten up the valves due to wear. Look at everything and run the engine while the cover is off (watch out for the flying oil and cover everything else up.)

Noobie question: How does a knock sound exactly? Do you use a probe to check which injector it is? Where do you probe it? I can't pinpoint the "knock" whereever that is?

IMO a knock would sound as if you took a hammer and hit it on a piece of thick wood.

A tap is like driving a nail but not quite as loud.

Unhooking each injector line [one at a time] to determine which cylinder is the problem I believe answers your nlast question.

Cheers,

Bill
