Tail Installation! So confused, frustrated :(.

So i am installing a right tailight on my 81 300SD. I unscrewed 6 screws, and 6 bolts. I feel no difference. WTF! The tailight is still really durable. WHat did i do wrong? Here's a pic, tell me if u need another. Thanks guys

The rubber gasket is stuck to the body.

There's a chance that it may be adhered somehow by the previous owner.
If you don't see any evidence of glue tap lightly around the inside edges the break the seal.

thx dan. but im still kinda confused. After i break it, do i have to glue it back on. THats kinda messy, is there any easy mechanical way to take it off. I highly doubt the previous owner glued it.

That happend to me. It is the years that the taillamp has been there that the rubber gasket seems to adhere itself to the body of the car. Take your fist and bump the back of th tail lamp it'll pop off. The removal of the lamp, at least mine was, diagonal not straight out. The screws in the corner bend seems to make some resistance on the lamp. Try it...you wont break it. Godd luck!

If I remember correctly, replaced one of mine 2+ years ago, you have to start the screws on the side then push toward the center to line up the rest.

SD said it right. put the side bolts through first then line up the back ones. It does take a little patience especially if you are using a new gasket.

just keep trying you'll get it.
