No glow plug light = bad timer?

One of the issues that I have with my '87 300D is that the glow plug light doesn't go on. It does warm up and I have checked to see if current is getting to the plugs and it does. I've checked the timer according to the FSM and by what I conclude the timer is bad. Is the light that important? I can hear the timer click off after about 20 seconds or so. Should I bother changing the timer?

From what you describe, I would suspect the bulb first. Much fewer $$'s.

That was the first thing I checked. Bulb was good.
I even checked to see if the was a short in the wire and it was fine. The FSM has a series of checks to do and I followed them. According to the FSM I would have to replace the timer. I'm wondering if there is a way to fix it?

On the '87 no light means a couple of bad plugs.

I would have never thought a bad glow plug would affect the light. The car starts a little rough when cold. I wouldn't doubt there's a bad glow plug or two.
I'm wondering are the 617 and 603 glow plugs the same? I've got a set of extra 617 plugs.

Sorry, I don't remember the size. Pencil type plugs.

Did you check the 80 amp fuse??

The light serves two functions. One, it teaches you patience as you wait to start the engine...

Two, it performs simple diagnostics and informs you of a problem by not illuminating.

FastLane shows the same part numbers for Bosch and Beru GPs for 1985 300SD and 1986 300SDL, so they may be interchageable, depending on year...

Best Regards,
Jim

I looked on ebay and one seller had the same plugs listed for both cars. I never realised that the GP relay did more than just energize the plugs.
