Which Oil is safe in my '95 E300D
I have been using the Mobil 1 5w40 for diesel trucks (yellow cap), but was recently told by a Merc. mechanic that I should be using 20w50. What should I be using? (I live in Northern California where it usually doesn't get above 90F and below 40F). Thanks, Jon

5w40? I use Rotella 15w40 year round here.... 5w40 seems like it would be too light in a california climate.......

Nonsense. If it's diesel rated, it's good to go, and I use the same thing in my car year round. Mobil 1 Truck and SUV with the yellow cap. What's most important is that you change it when you're supposed to.

Your mercedes mechanic is misinformed. 20W-50 is not diesel rated, at least I haven't seen one. d.delano hit the nail on the head, though I would also add to stay away from single weight oils even though those may be diesel rated. Mobil 1 5W-40 is probably the best oil and most would probably agree. Regular 15W-40 oil will work just as well. End of story.

The Mercedes recomended, "year-Round" oil for your car is:
Mobil1 SuperSyn European Car Formula, 0W-40. It carries the highest certification that Mercedes has, ie: 229.5, applicable to both Diesel and Gazoline engines. See the following link: http://www.whnet.com/4x4/oil.html This oil is usually available at Wal-Mart. Phil

While on the subject of motor oil, need your opinion on Chevron Delo400 15/40, heve been using this oil in my 240D, new motor with 40K on it. I live in Houston where it is summer 9 months a year, I change oil and filter every 2000+ miles.

Short of starting another oil thread, I recently gained confidence in the use of 05-40 Moble One, also, Rotella T synthetic 05-40, both diesel rated.
You need to stop thinking 5 weight (thin as alcohol) is what is running in there (not providing enough film thickness) and consider that it is 40 weight instead. The 5 is only representative of it's ability to lubricate properly in very very cold climate conditions at start-up. After the engine comes up to temperature, the oil lubricates to 40 weight viscosity, but no thicker. |

Oh yes I forgot about that......should I use something lighter than the 15-40 in mine during the winter? I've been using it for years now and it seems to do fine in the winter.....plus I will be using a heater exclusively this winter, I may get a magnet one to heat the oil pan too....its yet to be seen....

Mobil Delvac 1 5w-40 is probably the best diesel oil in the world. 20w-50 is junk compared to it; Castrol 20W-50 isn't even CH rated afaik.

Chevron Delo 400 CI-4+ with plenty of moly and boron to keep your engine happy for miles to come, Mobil Delvac Super, another excellent choice, if you feel like spending money or are going to subject your vehicle to extreme conditions, Delvac-I or Delo Synth but for average, regular use, the UOAs don't look convincing over the regular mineral HDEOs like Delo 400 or Delvac Super.

Just an FYI, I remeber looking up the specs between the D1 with a similar Mobil 1 5w-30 and Mobil 0w-40 Euro blend. The Delvac was the closest in spec to the Euro blend I could find on the local shelves.
