Brake dust...bad....can't....keep....clean, believe it or not they WERE clean yesterday....they already look like that!!! I used a whole bottle of eagle one aluminum cleaner (works extremely well) but its a lost cause, they're dirty again in about 1-3 days. You can see the rear wheels do stay clean though, thankfully.... No way, never ever going on ebay... this car is staying with me for the rest of my life. My interior is "ok" but I will have to fix a couple things first....I'll take some pics wednesday maybe, thats my free day and I can do my interior repairs (some trim stuff and such)....I do have a mint dash though, no cracks! Maybe an engine pic too, I degreased it and its pretty clean

Nice looking car!
I have never had great luck with Turtle wax products in the past. My dad loves them and swears by them though. I find waxing alone doesn't give me the very deep shine I want. For those of you who have seen my car in person my paint isn't that great, but it was pretty dull and oxidized when I got it. I find a clay bar is a great first step to really clean and prep the paint. Then you need to polish it and bring the color back. I use Meguiars show car #9 glaze. But if your finish is bad you will need to maybe use a 2-3 step system. A real buffer and a good rubbing compound will bring most paint back. Wetsanding with like 1200 grit is the last resort. I used to like Meguiars Gold class but it doesn't last. Now I use their NXT and it is easyer to work with. Also it seems to last a long time. I wax my car once a month so to me it doesn't matter how long the wax lasts. You really should wax your car at least every 3 months to really keep the paint up. Brake dust is a pita, I clean my wheels every other day. When I have time in the summer I wipe them down with some quick detail every night.

Isn't there a metal or plastic disc you can get that fits on the inside of the rim to help keep the dust off your wheel? Or maybe its just on the rear wheels. I seem to recall seeing them somewhere...
I was just joking about ebay. I said that because I bought a car sight unseen off ebay and it looked great....nice shiney paint, clean interior, no rust....but had every mechanical problem you could think of. You've got a good one there. Don't blame you for keeping it. Ever notice how MBZ metallic colors stay on the car but yet the American car manufacturers can't seem to get metallic colors, especially silvers, to stick. In the old days Turtle wax was THE wax and then it kinda faded away. back in the day it was great wax but hard to get off. Glad to see they have come up with a great product once again. Hattie....your paint looked great at the GTG. I think its original too, correct? Cheers, Bill Last edited by bill murrow; 09-12-2005 at 08:54 PM. |

Yes fastlane sells those....they're called "kleen wheels" and they're these metal black shields that fit into the wheel...the '83 has them, its why its wheels stay so clean (some still gets out around them though by the hub...so they still get dirty...)......but I wonder about proper ventilation, as they pretty much block all air flow to the rotors....at least on that side.....and I sure don't want the front ones to warp. I want them to last as long as possible, and they're expensive ATE powerdiscs, so I want them with good ventilation. I usually just let the brake dust build up a little while, then I go to the carwash and use the "high pressure soap" "wheel cleaner" and "high pressure rinse" for about 1.5 mins, and it gets 90% of it off.....thats been my solution.

Try porterfield brake pads. They do dust the wheels a lot less. On my little roadster Benz, I've added cryogenic treated front discs with the porterfields....and I have to clean the wheels once each year. Once each year--no typo.

Is there not dustless brake pads on the market these days?
I've seen them advertised somewhere... Cheers, Bill |

I think there are....my old pads didn't make much dust (don't know what kind they were) but the rotors warped and were pretty grooved from them...I don't know what set of pads # that was....probably not the first. Aren't those dustless and low dust pads harder on the rotors? I'd rather have the dust and faster pad wear than faster rotor wear....my current rotors have barely any material taken off them yet and about 60% of the pads are gone...in the last 13k miles or so since they were installed. Also the OEM pads definatley have a better braking strength than the former ones I had.....like I said I'm not too concerned about it, I just spray them off every now and then to keep it looking reasonable....and the rear wheels don't get dirty even with the oem pads.

I think the car was repainted sometime in 1997-98ish.....maybe a little earlier...but I do know its been repainted at least once. I got it in 2002....and I don't have very many records for it....just the dealer service manual, which goes up to about 160k miles in it maybe 170....the continued into the "notes" pages adding stuff when the "slots" ran out.......I got it at 207,128.....so not that many miles between where the records left off and when I got it....and as far as I know I am the second owner....
That pic covers up the paint scratches and issues very well It has a number of flaws and repairs on it....and the passenger rear door is dented in a little from a hit and run 2 years ago.....

I know my car was rear ended in the early 90's, 94ish I think. Judging by the overspray everything was painted except the hood and front fenders, and maybe the roof. Still not bad for 11 year old paint.

It also says it has little microscopic "light reflecting particles" to make it reflect a lot of light....

Ive been meaning to wax mine .... guess I better get to it before the season is over. Been busy working out all the minor PO bugs and stuff since I only had it for about 3 weeks now. Will get to waxing it soon. I've been using Klasse on my other cars and like it because it lasts so long. PITA to apply/remove though. If I wax twice per year it always stays protected and beads water nicely. That one is like a polymer not carnuba. I've tried carnubas (zymol) and find that they look excellent, beter than klasse even, but just don't last long so I bailed on that strategy some time ago.
That is one nice looking car - excellent color and the wax job looks great! Charlie |
