Turbo Whine

My 83 300D has developed a noticeable whine when the RPM's reach 2300. I'm suspecting a turbo issue since that's about when the wastegate opens. So I inspected the compressor wheel tonite and it seems to spin freely with little to no axial or radial play. Searching the thread archives really doesn't return anything about whine noise increases. I'll check the boost tomorrow. Any thoughts on increase turbo whine?

check the bypass hose, it may be split causing the noise.

ok, but if you could explain where the bypass hose is located it would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Also check the fitting of the U-tube that goes from the air cleaner housing to the turbo, if it's loose, then you'll hear the turbo. Mine is cracked and worn on the 300D, so I'll be replacing mine soon.

thanks. i heard also the the air recirc valve could be the source of the problem and disconnecting the vac hose (like i did on the egr) may help. any thoughts there?

i don t know

the answer to the last question, but agree with the idea athat it is an air gap somewhere and not to worry too much about the turbo itself at least at first because they are extremely durable and not usually a source of trouble. i once rebuilt one because i started hearing a whining noise.... of course after all that i still whinned.
