MB motorhome with 616

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Mercedes-Diesel-Class-A-motorhome_W0QQitemZ4574409155QQcategoryZ50056QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

It looks like it's in fairly decent condition. It wont be a speedster but it's spacious and rare in the US.

A friend of mine had one of those. VERY slow! Maybe 55mph on the flats with no headwind! It would be cool to dump a 617 turbo in though

I had one with a 5 spd in Europe and it would do about 68 on the flat. If I'm not mistaken, the really slow ones have a different direct injection engine. OM352?

Crikey, I think I've finally found a vehicle that I can beat with my 240D.

Really, though, sometimes I feel inclined to believe that MB made some really slow vehicles as some kind of sick practicle joke.

I know it's hard to believe, but I did not find my 307d motorhome with a 616 that slow. My current 409d is definitely peppier than the 300d. It all has to do with the gear ratios.

So you think my 240 was slow? At least it passes fuel stops with ease....

I saw one of these motor homes go by my place a while ago. Sounded like one of our cars going up the road, wound out to the max. This guy was towing a car behind it too. Merge would not be attempted with this setup.

18 MPG not bad though....

Cheers,

Bill

yeah Bill it was slow....but where you live I wouldn't have panic attacks driving it regular. Its fine once its moving...its the merging that would scare me to death. Hell the fact that I basicly dumped the clutch with the go pedal burried in the gravel and didn't kick up one stone really dumbfounded me.

Down near me...now I would have to be on Prosac with the nuts around here waiting to get rear-ended..

I drive the 240 way more than anything else. Betcha it'll be great in the snow. It won't spin even in wet grass! I had to get a small running start to get it up on the ramps.

Once you get to around 55 or 60 MPH its fine. A turbo would've helped...any ideas as to why the factory never put turbos on these little 4 bangers?

Yeah, your area is another story. When you see a spot to merge you gotta be there instantly or get run over.

Why don't they have more pics? The most important pic is missing...the engine!

Would be neat to see and drive in person.

Because pics cost money. And most would want pics of their individual part anyway.

Cheers,

Bill

yes...100 or 200 lbs of sand inbags in the trunk and that should go anywhere...you would be hard pressed to overpower the wheels unlike a 300D turbodiesel.

Or just the wife in the back seat oughta work, don't ya think? LOL A set of chains and I could go through drifts. The extra weight from the chains might stop the tires from turning at all though....

Cheers,

Bill

well with a rear wheel drive you want extra ballast over the wheels. Limited slip rear end or not. And its not a good idea to tell the wife to hop in the back you need some ballast back there...

Not unless you sleep in a seperate room with a deadbolt. They tend to go after the jewels when you say that.

This winter will be interesting as it will be the first winter I have driven a rear wheel drive car WITHOUT LSD rear end since 1980.
