85 300SD oxidizer trap
 

Ok, My car has an oxidizer trap, Where is this? is it the big can that is right at the manifold?
What dammage will be done by just having it removed?
I know that MB may replace it, but I am thinking on the lines of a more open exhaust system possibly giving the car more power? It works on the Ford 7.3.
Same principle here? More flow = more power?

If you do have it still, removing it will only help. Lower EGTs should result, run better at higher RPM, etc. I'd get rid of it as quick as you could.

I'd look for a "federal" manifolds found on 80-84 SD's. They can be found quite often in pick-n-pull yards. You should be able to use your current turbo unless the TrapOx has damaged it.

I have "cleaned out" the trapox in my 300d. I haven't gotten the installation kit yet. So it's still apart. I was wondering what damage the trapox could cause to the turbo? Anything I could look for? My turbo wasn't working right prior to this.

They had a bad habit of letting little chunks break off inside when they get too hot or too much soot trapped. That's one reason MB had a huge recall with the 85 OM617's and 86+ OM603's. We all know that a 100,000rpm turbine and solid objects passing through don't mix. :D

Hollowing out the TrapOx like one would a gassers cat is not a very good idea. Not only can debris stay in there and break off later, but it's just a football sized can for the exhaust to expand inside before the turbo (Leading to very poor turbo spool-up).

I have read that post several times, a lot of good info. But it deals with the exhaust replacement.
I still do not know what a trap looks like. I assume it would be inbetween the air filter and the turbo? I do not see anything in there. I do not want to have to change the manifolds, but I can if that is the only way to get away from this.
My turbo is still in good shape, I just do not want to loose it due to this...
Short of replacing the manifolds is there any way to remove it?

I don't think you are reading it well enough. In the post are several pictures of the manifolds as well as the trap. Everything is pretty much detailed in that post on how to get rid of the trap. Unless you get a piece of pipe to replace the trap, you have to swap the manifolds.

before you lift a finger to pick up a wrench or call your friendly Indy, take it to the nearest dealership and ask the service manager if it isn't covered under the factory recall, they will have service records on file of work done at the dealer. They may just remove it and put the straight pipe in at no charge. Don;t let them do a bunch of expensive work though, make it clear you want to apply for the factory "service campaign" (fancy words for recall)
