Lighting issue

Hi,

I recently noticed my right side headlamp only works when in high-beam mode. I'm real new at this, so I'm not sure if its the bulb or something else that needs replacing?

Also, while I'm at it, I have two other related questions---the plastic frame that the light sits in has been destroyed, and I need a new one. Is this a tough job to do alone, or should I take it in? Also, can anyone recommend that best manual for my car? I have a 1984 300SD Turbo.

thanks in advance.

OK, I kinda found my answer to the bulb switching thing...but I'm still in the dark as to how to approach installing a new headlight frame. I've never done anything like this before.

Can anyone offer insight, or a link to a thread here? Sorry if this has been asked before.

You can't get much easier than changing the headlight frame.

Open the hood, look at the backside of the headlights and note the large white plastic knurled knobs. I believe there are (4) headlight and (1) side marker. Remove the knobs and pull straight out.

They are available aftermarket and you may even find a decent one in salvage.

I just dumped my US stuff for Euros. There are three plastic knobs that hold the frame in place. Here's a link to the part: http://catalog.eautopartscatalog.com/mercedesshop/sophio/quote.jsp?clientid=catalog.mercedesshop&cookieid=1M213UQ821M213UY3G&baseurl=http://catalog.peachparts.com/&partner=mercedesshop&year=1981&product=P8010-16255&application=000025003

I think this actually the part you are looking for:

http://catalog.eautopartscatalog.com/mercedesshop/sophio/quote.jsp?clientid=catalog.mercedesshop&cookieid=1CQ0J3JZ41M2141BV6&baseurl=http://catalog.peachparts.com/&partner=mercedesshop&year=1984&product=P8013-11856&application=000038460

You should be able to find a used one someplace, eBay, salvage yard, etc.

Yep, that's the one---I'll be getting it shipped in a day or so. Does it take a regular philips screwdriver? hard to tell from that angle.

I assume that if a bulb works in high beam but not low beam...the bulb itself is the problem, not the wiring, correct? Never changed one of those either.

thanks guys!

A filament is used to produce light inside your headlamp. You have a filament for each function. One for low and a second for high. The low filament is most likely broken due to age and useage. Replace the bulb, or sealed beam in this case, and be on your way! I suggest replacing bulbs in pairs as bulbs reduce their intensity with useage. It might be a good idea to check the aim of the headlamps too.

PM me for more q's or info.
