Engine oil black after only 1000 miles
The engine oil in my wifes 84' 300dt has turned black after only 1000 miles. I used rotella t during the oil change. Is this color change normal? The car is in great shape and has done about 200,000 miles.
Thanks |

if you would have checked it would have been black after 100 miles.
Yes its normal for a diesel and nothing to be concerned about.

It would turn black quickly anyway, but the fact that most people do not drain t he oil cooler during an oil change, adds to the speed at which the oil turns black.

When I had the 300CD, the oil would turn black after about 5 minutes of the engine running...

Mine will be black if I just drive around the block!!!
I bought the car from a dealer who insisted thay had changed the oil. But since the oil was black I did not believe them and changed it myself. The next day it was black again. |

.. and the oil is doing exactly what it's supposed to: keep the soot in suspension until the big chonks can get filtered out.

Mine stays golden color as long as I drain out all the old oil and change filter and pour it in the engine. This is the dipstick reading tho. There would be little streaks of black in it sometimes. Turn on the engine and let it idle for a min or so and forget it. Black all over again.

seconds not miles
My Mobil 1 usually turns black after about 1000 minutes, not miles. Now, that is, 1000 minutes of driving, idleing, parked in garage. It must be really doing its job.
It doesn't take long.
