300d ran for 10 sec then nothing

Finally after 2 day of trying to get the air out after changing the filters-it ran for 10 sec. then died.Tryed 5-6 times today to get it to start and it does not even try. I am a first time 300d owner -is it always this hard to get the air out-is there a better way. I do not know what to do next. Why would it run then die. Need help-thanks.

Fill the filter with fuel, then install. Prime your fuel system with the pump on the IP. The big round white plastic thing is the primer handle. Unscrew [counter-clock-wise] the primer pump handle and pump it up by pulling up/down on the handle. This pressurizes the system. After you feel a little back pressure, screw the pump handle back down. Get in and crank, pumping the go pedal like crazy. When it starts, keep pumping the pedal until it wants to run correctly.

And yes it does take a long time to get it primed by cranking. Make sure you give your starter a rest!

Cheers,

Bill

Bill, pumping the pedal won't accomplish anything.

Just leave the pedal on the floor with the rack fully open.

You've been driving too many gassers.

You're right in both instances! Ah yes...theres one in every bunch. Thats why I only view the open discussion. Dag gum naysayers...

I come from the day of mechanical fuel pumps.

And a mechanical starter that would break your arm if you started at the top instead of the bottom.

And you can't tell me that you my friend do not remember mechanical fuel pumps. The ones that squirted gas out when the diaphram went bad.....and cost $15 tops.

Least us not forget .20/gallon for diesel...back in the day when I had hair on the sides AND the top.

Cheers,

Bill

won't start

The car is a 1983.I will try putting the peddel to the floor. Why is there no shut off between the main fuel filter and the IP.That way you would not get air into the IP. You could close the valve when you change your filter and would not have to worry about getting air in the IP.

No shutoff valve, because it isn't neccessary Dave. When you change the filters or do anything else along those lines, you just engage the hand pump (white circular knob just below the injection pump) and pump until you feel resistance, then pump more until you hear a slight wheezing sound, indicating fuel has filled the entire system and is being returned. Secure the hand pump, and start the car. If you didn't fill the new filter with fuel before installing it, it may take a little while with the hand pump to fill it. Without the hand pump, and with an empty filter, you will NOT get the car to start with the starter, period. (ok, so maybe with 3 spare starters and many hours on the battery charger, it could happen)
