importing a diesel from europe

what is involved in importing a used diesel mercedes, or minicooper from UK? somthing a few years old maybe.

I imported a 1973 BMW 3.0csi and a 1976 MB 280slc from the Middle East in 1983 and it was waaaaay more trouble than it was worth. I think that today's regulations, est. for safety, are more stringent and the conversion to US standard are expensive. Personally I would give it a miss.
