Are there any computer controls on '87 603 engine?

I was wondering if there were any computer controls on the engine in my 87 300D? I was planning to do some testing on the EGR and I got concerned when I read that on some of the newer diesels the turbo would work if the EGR was disconnected.

there's nothing that is associated with the EGR on the 603.960 that can't go "bye bye"
Later diesels (95 on) use a computer to sense egr or MAF and that can botch up the system if a bb gets into a vac hose.

All my stuff is off for testing purposes... including the AFM. No problems at all. I'll post a pic of how I bypassed it shortly. Nondigicam owner here.

Removing it limits more places for vac leaks to occur and a few less points for leaks in boost pressure.

Sounds good. It looks like the egr is about to mysteriously fall off.
Isn't there an MAF on the '87 603?

My TDI will throw codes (CE light) if the EGR is plugged... but a kind fellow produces what he calls and "Epsilonian Device" (for testing purposes only) that will fool the computer into thinking the EGR is still in-line. For the sake of archiving this info, I thought I'd mention it... there ARE ways around even computer-monitored emissions systems. Surely someone could build an Epsi Device for a later MB diesel...

MAF or AFM whatever, yes its under the air filter housing. gsxr said he can tell no difference with one bypassed and original. I left mine in place but all vac lines to that side of the engine divider wall are disfunctional (disconnected at the source, that odd "F" shaped tee at the vac pump. One of Brian Carleton's blank-off plates is due to be installed in place of the EGR valve (for testing purposes).

That's the unit I bypassed when trying to diagnose why my SDL wasn't seeing full boost fuel enrichment.

I figure by being rid of that, the cat in the downpipe, and hacking the air intake box you'd pick up at least 15rwhp... five for each one. That'd be at the minimum. But by dumping cats I've seen higher numbers than that alone... not to mention lower EGTs.

You should have an Electronic Diesel Control. It sets the idle speed and keeps it there, hot, cold, A/C, etc. An speed adjuster is located on the driver side cowling, behind the brake booster, for fine adjustment to the speed.

There is a solenoid on the IP that responds to the EDS signal to set the speed. Mechanical idle (solenoid off) is usually set a 500 rpm, while EDS governed idle is 700 or so.

EDS might also control EGR valve.

I think that's all for computers.
