Beginning a new realm of automotive repair...
I have absolutely nothing against the sweet marriage between computers and automobiles, but prepare for many more events like these:
http://www.betanews.com/article/Software_Bug_Stalls_Prius_Hybrid_Cars/1129308331#talkback Perhaps the auto manufactures should release a beta version of the new vehicles to enthusiasts before public release? I would gladly test some new drivelines if they would let me…. Would someone please set these fellows straight with some diesel comments?

I want to see a stalled prius and stop and ask them how many mpg's they're getting since the engine won't run.

Two years ago when we were car-shopping (well two and a half) we looked at the hybrids, particularly the Honda Insight. My wife drives 50 miles one-way every day for work, and by "every day" I mean often even all seven days of the week. (She and the kids also have started attending a church there, hence the Sunday drive.)
It would be great to get 70 mpg or whatever the Insight does, but to have only two seats and no cargo space seemed like a bad idea. And the Prius promised something like 60 city mpg but only 51 highway, and the vast majority of her miles are driven on I-85. Then, we discovered the stickshift Volkswagen Jetta GL. ... Bought one at Martens VW-Volvo in Washington, D.C., for $16,575. (The whole deal was done via e-mail, phone and fax, by the way, we only had to drive up to sign the papers and get the car.) We picked up the car on my wife's birthday, March 3 of 2003, and that Jetta diesel already has 91,000 miles on it. Her last three tanks of gas averaged 51.9, 51.9 and 50.8 mpg. Her diesel will almost certainly outlast the Prius powertrain (and gizmos), maybe doubling their lives. Obviously we don't even know yet how long-term-reliable the hybrids will be, or even what they'll cost to fix when they DO break. When getting 50 mpg in a remarkably peppy, clean, modern diesel, why bother with a hybrid? |

"why bother with a hybrid?"
You got that right, I cant imagine the potential problems with the interface between the two systems
