Now Ray is showing some MEANINGFUL data. One tankful doesn't indicate much. You need to string together at least a half dozen tankfuls and note the driving conditions for it to be meaningful.

I recently took a 2,300 mile trip and posted detailed MPG data in a thread in Tech Help right after the trip. I went to retrieve it and post the link here, but it was lost in the recent RAID drive crash.

Long story short, my 286,000 mile, manual trans, 300E averaged 29.36MPG for the trip. Included lots of flat highway driving, but also lots of mountain climbing up 9000 ft ASL. Not bad for a car capable of 144MPH.

Have a great day,

Vehicle: 1982 300TD turbodiesel

Dates from fillup to fillup: 8/18/05-8/28/05
Miles driven from fillup to fillup: 444.9
MPG: 27.7 MPG
Mileage Percentage: 80% highway, 20% city
This was mostly commuting to work with lot's of contruction zones & heavy traffic.
***********************************************
Dates from fillup to fillup: 8/28/05-9/7/05
Miles driven from fillup to fillup: 442.7
MPG: 30.1 MPG
Mileage Percentage: 80% highway, 20% city
I was leaving work a little early to avoid traffic. Also stopped doing jack-rabbit starts and drove between 55-60 as often as I could.
***********************************************
Dates from fillup to fillup: 9/7/05-9/15/05
Miles driven from fillup to fillup: 456.0
MPG: 30.4 MPG
Mileage Percentage: 80% highway, 20% city
Same driving habits/conditions as previous week.
***********************************************
Dates from fillup to fillup: 9/15/05-10/4/05
Miles driven from fillup to fillup: 398.5
MPG: 28.6 MPG
Mileage Percentage: 80% highway, 20% city
Drove it like I stole it. I just wanted to see if my driving habbits of the previous 2 weeks were paying off. It looks like they did.
***********************************************
Dates from fillup to fillup: 10/4/05-10/12/05
Miles driven from fillup to fillup: 438.0
MPG: 29.9 MPG
Mileage Percentage: 80% highway, 20% city
Driving conservativly again. Max speed of 55.
***********************************************
Dates from fillup to fillup: 10/12/05-10/22/05
Miles driven from fillup to fillup: 441.9
MPG: 31.8 MPG Best Ever Mileage!!
Mileage Percentage: 80% highway, 20% city

Drove it VERY conservativly. Stuck as close to 55mph as I could. No Itallion tune-ups or fast take-offs. Didn't try to cut anyone off and didn't take retaliation when I was cut off. As a side note.... I found that I was much more relaxed by the time I got home everyday.
**********************************************
Hope this serves it's purpose in comparing mpg's.

Happy motoring.

I've only finished one tank since I bought the thing, but 1995 E300D cruising at 80mph with AC on = 30.55 mpg.

= 26.724 mpg

60% city, 40% highway

beats 19.2 anyday.

Here are the last few fillups on mine:

400 to 425 miles between fillups is what I usually go.

First: mostly city, lot of 55mph, half of it 25-35mph stop and go
I flatten my pedal a lot btw.

MPG: ~22.6

Second: (same type of driving, was lighter on pedal)

MPG: ~23.2

Third: (same)

MPG: ~22.9

Fourth: (about 3/4 freeway @75-80mph + some city driving)

MPG: ~23.7

Highest ever recorded by my car: 180 miles across Michigan UP @ a near steady 55-60mph......resulted in ~29.7mpg

Lowest ever: Middle of winter, lots of warmups before driving, winter fuel, and sliding all over and 3000+ rpm....snow...killing incidents. Resulted in 18.4mpg

AVG MPG for 9/2/05-12/16/05 which included 12 fillups w/o additives: 21.7 MPG

During the next 12 tankfuls, I will add 4 oz. of PowerService DieselKleen to the tank. I will calculate the average MPGs with the additives, then for the 12tankfuls after that, I'll calculate the average MPGs without fuel additives to see if there really is any benefit mileage per gallon wise to using additives. Keep your eyes peeled.

Most of this is 100% city with trips of 1.5 miles and an ocasional 10 mile day.
6/19 and 12/11 were trips on interstate with some city (maybe 80-20)
Also note the drop in mileage using B20.
I would say this is not bad for a car with 300,000 miles. And it doesn't use any oil.

The last tank on my 1995 E300D was 31.8 mpg. I drive 80 mph on the same 140 miles every day and fill up at the same station every time. I usually see 30.2-30.5 mpg, not sure what the increase was for - BUT WHO CARES?

This car as a commuter beats the crap out of my '04 Ford Diesel as a commuter - 16 mpg. My range on that was 400 miles on 24 gallons; my range on the MB is 700 miles on 23 gallons. Saves me about $300-350 a month.

I really love driving this car.

Fuel mileage compare

1959 180D 35mpg Diesel
1967 230SL 18mpg Premium Gasoline

The 230SL is also injected, with six-plungers. Both manual gearbox, though column shift on diesel.
I believe the 180D about 2400lb, the 230SL about 2830lb/2750lb without hardtop.
The w113 wants to rev high, of course. But then the w120 revs high too.

Much of this is on mountain roads. Did I mention the SL has 3-1/2 times the HP of the D?
