Ah! Yes, with the help of my father, I used a scissors jack to break/loosen the bolts on the right side. That is the reason why I managed to get the first caliper off.

The problem is that I the direction of the bolts has been reversed for the left side; now I have to push the wrench towards the floor to loosen it.

Yes, I did forget about the GBM method.

Have to try this more often. The only downside is the need to keep any extension as short as possible...........preferably going without an extension.

..............or, block up the back end of the vehicle and set the jack in front of the wheel.

turn the wrench around.

and you can use the jack again. well maybe there is other stuff in the way.

although it is nice to replace calipers in pairs... if one is working fine, i wouldn't hesitate to leave it on.

the fsm was written for the dealer fixing $30,000 newer cars working for the original well heeled owners who would be upset if they had to bring it in again. you and i can afford to wait and see. if the second caliper fails to work correctly you can always change it later.

my $.20

"a bolt that it won't either snap "

You say that with such lack of worry ...... caliper bolts are one of those things you want to put in a little extra work to TRY to not snap off...

Of course snaping bolts sucks. I have never had a problem snapping caliper bolts taking them off. They are pretty thick bolts 140ft pounds ain't going to break them.

Putting them on is another story, impact guns are not for that.

I managed to get the right caliper off. I took one look at it and went , I showed it to my father and he just shook his head and said "I'm not paying for it."
Does anybody know where I could get new calipers for an 82 240d, for a lower price?
thanks to you ahead of time. *hugz*
Which calipers, front or rear?
Go with a remanufactured brake caliper, it is cheaper, and will last years.
Six point socket, breaker bar, and put a piece of pipe over the handle to add leverage.

"I have never had a problem snapping caliper bolts taking them off."

The thing about a forum is that one can give someone with less experience the idea that something is legit and without problems.....which has the potential to cause them a LOT of problems....

The rule is " try to be kind to your lesser mechanically equipped forum participants "..

Uhh...do you have a friend who owns a impact wrench (a batter powered (the big ones) or a pnumatic one?

Garunteed it will get that bolt out in no time. Do NOT lube that bolt when you put it back in. Blue locktite it.

Stop writing 's and laughing at me!

I'm not lifting the car any farther than it is now. I have a serious phobia about lifting a car, and an even bigger one regarding working under a car that is on jack stands.

Well, it scares the heck out of me....I mean, the car weighs more than 3000 pounds, I keep imagining what it will sound like if the jack just gives out and the car comes crashing down...

Right now the front wheels are chocked and the rear is on two 1500 pounds jack stands....even still, I feel anxious when I'm sitting on a stool with my head under the fender...looking at the brake line attached to the caliper. I just can't wait to get out from under there.
