1985 300SD power steering filter replacement
You may want to install a new lid seal during this DIY repair.

#1. Remove lid from power steering reservoir.
#2. Remove ten millimeter nut from spring retainer/fluid level indicator.
#3. Remove spring retainer/fluid level indicator.
#4. Remove spring.
#5. Remove old filter with needel nosed pliers.
#6. Install new filter with needel nosed pliers.
#7. Install spring.
#8. Install spring retainer/fluid level indicator.
#9. Install ten millimeter nut.
#10. Install lid for power steering reservoir.

When you do step #2 (removing spring retainer nut) Carefully, ease the tension off of the spring or that nut may be launched into never-to-be-seen-again land! :eek: Fortunately, my brother was watching and saw where it landed. :o

That's what I'm wondering... I'd say every 10K or so? :confused:



Also, I drain that pump each time I change the filter. That fluid can be nasty! :eek:

Nothing in the books that I can find. So, I'd say every 50,000 to 100,000 miles, unless you have nothing else to do.

PS Filter Change
 
My old-style filter ('86) had never been changed to the new style, pleated-paper, filter, so I freaked when I opened 'er up and did not find what I expected. Remove the nut, tan plastic, and spring, and lift out the steel plate; underneath is a fiber filter and a steel ring. Toss all this and install the new-style replacement filter. Thanks to this site's members for seeing me through.

I'm glad you wrote that. I just replaced mine and pulled out a plate, I guess what was a solid fiber filter ring, and then another retainer ring beneath that. I replaced all of these with the new filter. I expected to pull out one filter and instead started pulling out these pieces. :eek: Yes my fluid was very nasty and it looked like there was water in it (looked like coffee with cream)

I got a hair full of ps fluid when the spring and washer went flying off the spindle too :D

I would suggest every 30,000 miles. For some M-Bs (like my '96 E300D) there doesn't seem to be a factory spec--the first PO took the car to the dealer for everything and changing the PS fluid was never mentioned (W210 has no filter). It looked to me as if the fluid had never been changed in 248,000 miles -- it was black and the pump was performing poorly at low engine speeds. I flushed the system and will repeat it after a few thousand miles just to make sure.

I've run across a couple of those style filters, you know they haven't been changed in a LONG time.:rolleyes:

I don't think it was ever flushed until I got a hold of it either. Mine too was noisy and labored at idle. A flush and filter did the trick.

I have a 1981 300SD and when I take the lid off of my box there is no plastic piece, just a metal collar kind of clip on top of the spring. Am I missing something inside there or do I just need to take off that clip and follow the rest? My steering wheel has about 2 inches of play, by the way.

Mine looks like yours...wondering if PO lost the plastic spring clip when changing fluids and didn't bother to get another...just bought a used pump from a junkyard for $50. will open reservoir tomorrow and see what it looks like and compare.

That metal spring clip is a lock ring, there were different styles.

Here's a pic of the "other" style, with the metal clip. Just wiggle that clip back and forth and the force of the spring will push it off.

1983 Mercedes 380SL Power Steering pump part
 
Took off cover for the power steering pump to change out filter for my 83 Mercedes 380SL and to my surprise the plastic spring retainer and 10mm nut was missing. Does anyone have one to sell or where to get one as I could not find one (probably calling it my an incorrect name)
