Dummy head
Testing cylinder rings with the head off requires a special tool.
Making a Dummy head is easy. A head gasket gives you the bolt pattern. 7/16 or 1/2 inch steel works very well. It only needs to cover one cylinder at any time. You can buy packets of gasket material at most auto parts stores. Cut the steel to size, bore a hole in the center for the air fitting.

Roy, I don't know how it is in Michigan, but there are dummy heads all over the place around here. Just walk out the door and stop at any retail store, or call the telephone company or the cable company and you can get more dummy heads than you could possibly ever use on one engine.
